Depression is a serious medical illness that involves the brain. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself.

Depression affects people of every color, race, economic status, or age; however, it does seem to affect more females than males during adolescence and adulthood.

Depressive disorders come in different forms, just as is the case with other illnesses such as heart disease. This pamphlet briefly describes three of the most common types of depressive disorders. Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms (see symptom list) that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime.

People who have low self-esteem, who systematically view themselves and the world with pessimism or who are readily overwhelmed by stress, are prone to depression. Family and social environment also play a role. For some teens, a negative, stressful, or unhappy family atmosphere can affect their self-esteem and lead to depression. In the United States, bipolar disorder was previously called "manic depression", though this term is no longer preferred by the medical community. Clinical depression is a common mood disorder in psychology and psychiatry. Clinical depression affects about 7-18% of the population on at least one occasion in their lives, before the age of 40. A less severe type of depression, dysthymia, involves long-term, chronic symptoms that do not disable.

Many people with dysthymia also experience major depressive episodes at some time in their lives. A variety of treatments including medications and short-term psychotherapies have proven effective for depression. Effective treatments for depression, including antidepressants and talk therapy. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is useful, particularly for individuals whose depression is severe or life threatening or who cannot take antidepressant medication. Lithium has for many years been the treatment of choice for bipolar disorder. There are various home remedies help relieve for constipation problems.Cashew nuts are extremely beneficial in treating depression, as it is a rich source of vitamins of B group and thus they aid in stimulating the appetite.

Home Remedies for Depression Tips

1. Drink tea with 1/4 teaspoon powdered cardamom seeds.

2. Diet has a profound effect on the treatment of depression.

3. The root of asparagus is useful in the treatment of depression.

4. A neutral immersion bath for one hour daily is also helpful in the treatment of depression.

5. Powder the seeds of 2 green cardamoms. Add to 1 cup of boiling water, add sugar and drink this tea twice a day.

6. Various yogic asanas such as halasana, paschimottanasana, sarvangasana highly beneficial in the treatment of depression.

7. Prepare a tea by adding 1/4-teaspoon tulsi and 1/2 teaspoon of sage per cup of hot water and drink this tea twice in a day.

8. Boil some seeds of cardamom in water with tea. It will give a very pleasing aroma to the tea. It is an effective home remedy for depression.
