Pain and Pain Management

Pain can be devastating. Pain, in the sense of physical pain, is a typical sensory experience that may be described as the unpleasant awareness of a noxious stimulus or bodily harm. Individuals experience pain by various daily hurts and aches, and occasionally through more serious injuries or illnesses.
Pain can be adjunct and simultaneous to nociception, the system which carries information to the spinal cord and brain about damage or near-damage in tissue.
As a part of the body's defense system, pain triggers mental and physical behavior that seek to end the painful experience.
Pain may range in intensity from slight through severe to agonizing and can appear as permanent or intermittent. It may be experienced as sharp, throbbing, dull, nauseating, burning, shooting or a combination of these.
Pain can be acute or chronic. The distinction between acute and chronic pain is not based on its duration of sensation, but rather the nature of the pain itself. Pain management and therapy is adequated to this distinction.
