History of Cialis

With a less than ordinary start, the drug company Icos was doing research on a PDE5 enzyme inhibitor called IC351 in 1993. The PDE5 enzyme inhibitor is how all erectile dysfunction medications operate. During this time and shortly after, Pfizer researchers happened to stumble on the interesting fact that Sildenafil Citrate, which was used for heart patients, caused them to get an erection. This all took place under clinical studies.

While the chemical IC351 was being studied, the studies had nothing at all to do with erectile dysfunction. Just one year afterwards Sildenafil Citrate was found to work for impotency, of course it was Pfizer that made this discovery. The Washington based company, Icos, began conducting their research back in 1990 but didn't get their first patent until 1994. These studies do not happen overnight, they do take a while to complete and develop a hypothesis. Phase I clinical trials began in 1995. It took two additional years before phase II clinical studies began. In 1997, Icos conducted its first study in patients with erectile dysfunction.

This phase lasted for two year up to the final third phase. Not until 1998 did Icos join together with well known Eli Lilly and Co. to market the drug to treat erectile dysfunction. Two years after the company merged them finally filed a new drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for IC351 and renamed Cialis.

In 2002 Lilly and Icos informed the American Urological Association that test results indicated that Cialis remained in the system and kept working for up to 36 hours. In 2002, Cialis was approved in Europe and in 2003 Cialis was approved by the FDA for use in the US. The best news was that Cialis had the advantage over the other two competitors; it was able to last longer by about 30 hours.
