The job of the President, according to Mr. Obama, is in part to ensure that everyone has an equal chance in America. He is absolutely correct. Each and every single person in this nation deserves the opportunity to achieve their best and thrive.

People with Disabilities, NCD, and SSA Reform

The population involved with any social program is the crucial element in making decisions to change the program. Making decisions without including the population involved is like making changes to something specifically designed for an individual without any concept of who the individual is. In short - attempts to somehow reform the SSI or SSDI programs without serious, in-depth involvement of People with Disabilities and Seniors is an insult and most likely fruitless.

The month of April, 2012 found some interesting statistics being released. For example; in April the number of workers decreased by around 340,000 people - finding the unemployment rate at 8.1%. The reason this is relevant to People with Disabilities is because during the same month greater than 255,000 of those workers applied for Social Security disability benefits. According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), almost 90,000 of them were enrolled.

In America today people who rely upon Medicaid for health care coverage are fighting for the programs that enable them to remain in their own communities and receive the health care they need. The people I am referring to are not only those who experience forms of disabilities from birth; disability can affect anyone at any point during their lifetime. Every single day in America, people experience everything from motor vehicle accidents to work-related accidents that find them with injuries serious enough they require assistance from the state through Medicaid.

Perspectives on Disability and Adequate Leadership

America has very serious, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities-violating issues. I could tell you that election years are the only time when I stop and ponder the potential for America's elected leadership to consider spending even a tithe of the massive military budget on the rather serious social concerns of people with disabilities. Unfortunately doing so would amount to a lie; I think about these issues on a regular basis.
