Video Clips on Disabilities - Disabled World Videos

The Disabled World Video section features information both for and about people with disabilities. The video clips cover a variety of different subjects, such as sports, assistive technology, health information, instruction of disability topics in classrooms, and much more.

The section also has videos that present disability subjects and news for persons who are deaf or hearing impaired through either American or British Sign Language and captioning.

There are many different award-winning videos, movies, and DVD's related to mental health, health care, aging and gerontology, gender and family issues, professional ethics, as well as the workplace in the Disabled World video section. One example is the, 'Inclusion Series,' which contains people with disabilities in real-life situations, capturing scenes of inclusion through their actions at home, school, play and work. People who utilize the Disabled World video section have the capability to comment on each of the videos in the section! There are a great number of categories for people to choose from where videos are concerned, leading to a wealth of information. The categories of information currently available include:

There are currently a number of Featured Videos available through the Disabled World video section. One of these is a video on the Deaflympics Opening Ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan, where greater than three-thousand athletes from more than sixty-five nations will compete in the 2009 Deaflympics. There is another featured video on Service Dogs in Training, as well as one concerning the controversial, 'I am Autism,' video.

While browsing through the video section at Disabled World, I ran across EVA Air Travel with a Disability. The video presents a young man who is traveling through the airline, which has made accommodations for people with disabilities a part of their services, unlike some other airlines. As I watched the video, I had a number of thoughts, not the least of which involved the fact that I now have osteoarthritis in all of my lower joints. Not only do I have osteoarthritis; both of my knees have bone deterioration as well, making me sort of, well – 'wobbly,' and a bit unsteady on my feet.

The young man was met at the airplane door by airline staff; he expected to have to give up his wheelchair. He did, but another one that actually stays on the plane was provided for him! Anytime he wanted to use it, all he had to do was ring for the airline staff and it would be brought to him. What this tells me is that, should I fly with EVA, anytime I need to get up and use the bathroom all I have to do is ring the bell. Turbulence and so forth in flight would probably find me sitting on my rear end on that same aisle floor if I attempted to wobble off down the aisle; it is good to know there is a hand available. I would rather ask for a hand than knock my head against a seat top or worse.

While the video shows the young man using a wheelchair and the excellent accommodations EVA Air travel has included for passengers with disabilities, I noted that the airline has ordered planes which have been modified as well! The bathrooms in the Boeing 777's they own are wheelchair accessible! Ordering the planes to be built this way did require them to give up a few hundred millimeters of space, reducing their seating capacity. Look at it this way – there are how many people with disabilities and baby boomer's in the world today? Giving up a row of seats in order to accommodate an increased number of passengers who will use your airline because you **do** accommodate them is a highly worthwhile exchange.

Should I choose to travel, I will most definitely keep EVA in mind. As I continue to age, the potential for using a wheelchair, not only on my part, but on my wife Wendy's part as well (she has arthritis too), is most certainly a possibility. In my opinion, airlines that do not accommodate passengers with disabilities are being stingy and ignorant, as well as refusing to serve their customers appropriately. Not everyone in this world is a corn flakes eating, twenty-year old, perfectly physically-fit and nondisabled person.

There are a vast and growing number of videos available through the Disabled World video section, something that is a joy to find. Other featured videos continue to be presented through this section on a continuing basis, making for incredible variety and opportunity for viewing pleasure. You can even submit videos that you have found and like for approval and contribute them to the community! Everyone gains from the Disabled World video section, something that is building the disability community as a whole, as well as being very enjoyable.
