Eat a Rainbow - Public Health Produce Fairs Provide Fresh Fruits and Veggies.

JCPH Nutrition Services has organized three produce and health fairs again this year for low-income residents and seniors who may not otherwise have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. While there are no income or residential requirements to participate, organizers trust that their goal of providing nourishment and education to low-income residents will be respected and supported.

A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables (DW Editor: Color chart of fruit and vegtables) can improve overall health and reduce obesity in our populations. Currently 55.7% of Colorado’s adults and 25.8% of Colorado’s children are considered overweight/obese. Obesity rates among children have doubled in the past 20 years. 1

Now in its third year, Jefferson County Public Health’s produce fairs encourage residents to make eating fresh produce a priority and promote a healthy lifestyle. In 2009, the fairs distributed approximately 17,000 lbs of fresh produce to 1,200 low-income families. In addition to the produce offered, educational booths are available on mental heath, tobacco prevention, early childhood development, and Medicaid and foodstamp assistance.

A survey of the 2009 fair attendees showed 60% are unable to buy fruits or vegetables as often as they would like because they could not afford them. Public health professionals have long touted the benefits of including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in one’s diet. Not only do they provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fibers, but they help to reduce obesity in our populations.
