Disability Statistics Maryland - There are an estimated 666,000 people in the state of Maryland over the age of five who have a form of disability. Approximately 120,000 people, or 2.4% of the state's population, experience difficulties with performing activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, or moving around inside of their homes. There are around 340,000 people in the state who have a form of work disability, and around 151,000 people with disabilities in Maryland who are employed. Around 22,000 people with disabilities in the state are unemployed, while 178,000 are currently not in the workforce.
Legislation established October as Disability History and Awareness Month in Maryland and encourages schools to educate students on the history of disabilities and promote knowledge and understanding of disabilities and those affected by them. Disability History and Awareness Month will add to the diversity of Maryland children’s learning environment.
Maryland Technology Assistance Program - The Maryland Technology Assistance Program (MD TAP) provides tools to help Marylanders with disabilities and seniors enjoy the same rights and opportunities as other citizens - http://www.mdod.maryland.gov/MTAP%20Home.aspx
Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children - Founded in 1979 through the vision of four families in Montgomery County, Maryland, Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children (CSAAC) is a private, non-profit agency which provides direct services to children and adults with autism across the lifespan - http://www.csaac.org
