Financial Help for Seniors in Macomb County, Michigan

The MiCAFE program is now available at 13 locations in Macomb County to provide people age 60 and older some much needed financial help.
MiCAFE (Michigan's Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly, pronounced my cafe) helps older residents apply for the Food Assistance Program which gives them money to pay their grocery bills using a Bridge Card.
"A lot of people are struggling to make ends meet," said Kate White, Executive Director of Elder Law of Michigan, which coordinates MiCAFE. "By applying for Food Assistance with MiCAFE, families can cut their bill at the grocery store and they can save their cash to pay for other things like rent and utilities. The average benefit is $70-$100/month."
For people 65 and older, MiCAFE can help in applying for Medicare Savings which reduces the cost of Medicare. "If they qualify for Medicare Savings, beneficiaries can get $98-$106 per month more in Social Security. This extra money can give older adults more options and better financial security in these hard times," said White.
