The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a public health alert on Friday after 32 people in 12 different states appeared to have contracted Salmonellosis from eating raw chicken products such as chicken cordon bleu and chicken breast kiev they had cooked in a microwave. The federal agency said that an epidemiological investigation by the Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Agriculture found that the 32 illnesses in Minnesota and 11 other states were linked because the Salmonella in each case carried the same DNA fingerprint. Tanya English, Executive Director of Exceptional Student Education announced, “Wakulla County School District has designated the first two weeks of October as Disability History and Awareness Weeks. This is a result of a bill passed by Governor Crist in 2008 and allows schools to provide information about disability history and promote the awareness of the contributions of individuals with disabilities.”

As a way to provide services for more children and adults with developmental disabilities, Amendment 51 is asking voters for an increase in the state sales and use tax. When fully implemented in 2010, the phased-in sales tax of two-tenths of 1 percent would raise about $186 million annually to help developmentally disabled individuals who are currently on the waiting list for services and care.

COLUMBIA - In a room full of people, and even a few guide dogs, candidates for Missouri state offices addressed issues on Saturday afternoon concerning the estimated 1 million disabled Missourians. The disabilities forum was hosted by the Congress on Disability Policy at the Hilton Garden Conference Center in Columbia. The advocacy group, which started in 2003, includes state associations and councils such as the Brain Injury Association of Missouri and the Missouri Centers for Independent Living. Some of the individuals who attended said they're still being affected by the Medicaid cuts of 2005. And now, limited resources are to blame for the increasing waiting lists at disability institutions. Many of the people at the forum asked candidates how they plan to support people with disabilities.

Health and Disability News for American Seniors:

The financial meltdown in the United States exacerbates the demographic “storm” hovering across the world. What the meltdown endangers is the security of people’s retirement, and that, in turn, puts more pressure on businesses to look at ways on the types of retirement plans that would work. Advocates for the poor fear many seniors will face even tougher decisions in the coming months. Buy needed medications, or pay the heating bill? Patch the leaky roof, or pay the mortgage? In Boston alone since February, 2007, the number of seniors using food stamps has jumped 39% to more than 69,000. Of the 1.7 million American men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, up to 340 thousand of them suffer from mild traumatic brain injury, and some of them don't even know they're hurt until months or even years after they return home. "They may go months seemingly normal just with headaches, and all of the sudden, they have lost their vision," said Bill Wilson, a blind rehabilitation specialist at the Orlando VA Medical Center.
