More Dementia Day Care Centres for NSW

A further four dementia day care centres will open across New South Wales by the end of this financial year, the Minister for Disability Services, Peter Primrose, said today during Dementia Awareness Week (September 16 - 26).
Mr Primrose said the centres were nearing completion in Belmont and Baulkham Hills, and work had started on centres at Port Macquarie and Camden.
He said the centres were a joint initiative by the Keneally and Gillard Governments to help cope with the increasing number of people with dementia.
“It is estimated that the number of people in NSW affected by dementia will quadruple from almost 80,000 to more than 340,000 in the next 40 years.
“It is the leading single cause of disability in older Australians and is expected to become the third greatest source of health and residential aged care spending within the next 20 years.”
Mr Primrose said that of the 16 dementia day care centres planned for NSW eight centres had already been built and opened.
“The centres which have opened in the past year have proved to be an extremely valuable local resource and much appreciated by the local communities because they provide outings, day trips, support, nursing and allied health services to people with dementia and their carers.
“They are just one of the several ways we are responding to the challenges of an ageing population.”
Mr Primrose said that dementia had been identified as a national health priority by the Australian Government and a key issue for older people in NSW by the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Ageing.
