The state of Queensland is located in northeastern Australia and covers an area of 1,730,648 square kilometers. The year 2008 found Queensland with a population of 4,279,400 people; its capital is Brisbane. Queensland is a coastal region and is bounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Great Barrier Reef. The coastal region is tropical and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988; it has become a major tourist attraction. The Great Dividing Range runs the entire length of the state; inland from it both cattle ranching and mining are important to Queensland. Captain James Cook charted the coastline in the year 1770, and in the 19th century the state housed a number of penal colonies. Queensland also drew settlers to the area because of its gold. Queensland became a constituent state in the year 1901 when the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed.

The economy of Queensland has enjoyed a boom in both mining and tourism in the last twenty years. An influx of interstate and overseas migrants, as well as large amounts of federal government investment, have increased mining of large mineral deposits and expanded the state’s aerospace sector. The main industries in Queensland include pineapples, bananas, peanuts, a number of tropical and temperate fruits and vegetables, wineries, grain crops, cotton, cattle, wool, sugar cane, and mining. The mining industry in Queensland produces coal, silver, gold, bauxite, zinc, lead, and copper. Refineries for sugar cane and copper are located along the eastern coastline.
Disability Statistics Queensland - In Queensland 6,020 people used Accommodation Support services in the year 2007. During this same year, 12,494 people used Community support, 4, 799 people used Respite services, and 17,566 people used Employment services. In Australia as a whole during 2007, 245,746 people used similar services.
