Queenslanders who are helping to build a fairer and more inclusive community for people with a disability were honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony in Brisbane today. Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk presented Disability Action Week Awards to individuals and organisations from across the state as part of 2010 celebrations. Ms Palaszczuk said the awards were for individuals and organisations making a real difference to the quality of lives of Queenslanders with a disability and their families and carers. “We need to ensure that people with a disability get equality, respect and access to services,” she said. “People with a disability can lead extraordinary lives - they can achieve extraordinary things and make an extraordinary contribution to society. “Today is an opportunity to recognise outstanding individuals who are making a real contribution to their community.” The 2010 Disability Action Week Awards winners are: * Individual Award - Disability Services * Individual Award - Community Services * Individual Award - Outstanding Disability Sector Worker, sponsored by Centre for Excellence in Behaviour Support * Individual Award - Outstanding Young Achiever, sponsored by the Institute for Healthy Communities * Community Organisation, Disability Organisation Award, sponsored by Randstad * Community Organisation, Community Association Award, sponsored by Queensland Rail * Education and Arts Award, sponsored by the Department of Education and Training * Private Enterprise Award * Government Award, sponsored by the Department of Transport and Main Roads * Outstanding Initiative Award, sponsored by Griffith University * Media Award * Reconciliation and Diversity Award * Minister’s Award for Excellence * Minister’s Encouragement Award Ms Palaszczuk said the awards were a highlight of Disability Action Week, which continues until Saturday 11 September. “Disability Action Week helps to create greater awareness about the challenges faced by people with a disability every day,” she said. “It helps to highlight the positive achievements and contribution people with a disability make in enriching communities right across Queensland.” For more information on how Disability Services Queensland is making a difference for people with a disability visit: www.disability.qld.gov.au Disabled World (www.disabled-world.com) provides a large range of worldwide health and disability information.
