Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk today released final design plans for Mossman's new All Abilities Playground.

Ms Palaszczuk said construction will get underway in mid-September on the new playground at George Davis Park, with works expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“Mossman’s new All Abilities Playground will be a great asset for the local community,” she said.

“This has been a real community project, with local residents contributing to the design of the playground.

“It will be a place where children with and without disabilities can come together to play and enjoy each other’s company.

“This is one of 16 All Abilities Playgrounds we’re building across Queensland as part of a $4.6 million partnership with regional councils.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the playground features include:

* A sand and water play area, incorporating sand tables, a mini studio, accessible diggers and even a waterfall

* A bamboo maze complete with musical implements and sensory plantings

* A free play area featuring talking tubes plus balance beams and timber steppers.

She said the Mossman project included $371,800 in Queensland Government funding and $100,000 from the Cairns Regional Council.

Member for Cook Jason O’Brien said the playground was great news for Mossman.

“This is a win for children with a disability and for local families,” he said.

“When the playground opens it will be a great asset for the whole community, providing hours of fun and recreation for children of all abilities.”

Councillor Julia Leu of Cairns Regional Council said the new Mossman playground would provide a whole new world of play experiences for children of all abilities.

“Its final concept design features a series of play zones covered by a large existing shade sail, with all areas connected by accessible pathways and surfacing,” Cr Leu said.

“A wheelchair-accessible carousel, with two bench seats and space for two wheelchairs at any one time, is an exciting component of the overall design.

“I understand the design also includes a flying fox and a swings zone that includes a bird’s nest swing and a double swing set with supportive seating.”

Facilities also include a picnic shelter with two tables and a barbecue, in addition to two existing picnic tables. There will also be a new platform and informal seating throughout, bike racks, a drinking fountain and perimeter fencing.
