Children of all abilities can now play together in a new, sea-inspired all abilities playground at Pialba in Hervey Bay, Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palszczuk said.
Ms Palaszczuk and Fraser Coast Regional Council Acting Mayor Julie Arthur today officially opened the Seafront All Abilities Playground at a local community celebration.
Ms Palaszczuk said it was one of 16 All Abilities Playgrounds being delivered across Queensland under a $4.6 million State Government partnership with regional councils.
“This playground has a real seaside theme, taking advantage of its great natural location on the water,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“Local residents have contributed to its design, making it the perfect place for families to come together and enjoy each other’s company.
“The playground features a wheelchair-accessible carousel, custom-built shipwreck, a swirling maze and swings to suit children of all abilities, as well as soft-fall surfacing throughout. Other sea-inspired playground elements include totems marking the Southern Cross, so children can ‘navigate by the stars’ and locate the South Pole.
“There’s also public art, an interactive musical turtle and a movement-activated sound feature which plays 18 recordings, including the sounds of waves crashing and seagulls squawking.”
Ms Palaszczuk said accessible facilities included a new toilet block, car park, sheltered barbecue and picnic areas, and a drinking fountain.
She said the State Government contributed $300,000 to the Pialba playground, with Fraser Coast Regional Council contributing almost $600,000.
Fraser Coast Acting Mayor Cr Julie Arthur officiated at today’s opening and paid tribute to community members for the important roles they played.
“Our special thanks go to the community steering group and its chair Joanne Argyle for keeping the community’s needs at the forefront throughout the planning and design process,” Cr Arthur said.
“Thanks go also to the many community members who participated in activities such as surveys and focus groups, particularly the many local special education students who provided invaluable insight into their needs and wants within the play environment.
“We’re proud of the end result and believe the community should be proud of it too. I firmly believe that it will greatly build on Hervey Bay’s reputation as an accessible, inclusive community.”
