All Abilities Playground Project - Queensland, Australia
Information provided by Disabled World - Published: 2010-06-30
The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring that all children, including those with a disability, have equal access to playgrounds so they can learn, grow and develop during play.
All abilities playgrounds are places where children of all ages and abilities can experience fun and challenging play alongside their friends and family members. The project recognises the fundamental importance of play in the health, wellbeing and learning of all children, regardless of their age or ability.
Sixteen new all abilities playgrounds are now under development across the state as part of the Queensland Government's All Abilities Playground Project, enabling participation in play.
The new play spaces are being created by local governments in collaboration with the Department of Communities (Disability Services), local communities and industry specialists. Involving children with a disability and their families in the design process enables them to have a voice and exercise control over how their needs are addressed in their local playground's design.
