The State Government is delivering a $600,000 boost to disability housing in Cannonvale.
Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk and Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt today visited the site of a new five bedroom house being developed by Compass Whitsundays.
Ms Palaszczuk said the State Government would contribute $600,000 towards the construction of the new house, which will be home to four people with a disability by mid-2011.
“This means a fresh start and a new home for four people with a disability,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“It also means a new beginning for their older parent carers, who have given so much to their children.
“The Queensland Government is doing more than ever to support older parent carers through the State-Commonwealth Disability Assistance Package.
“Through this initiative, Queensland is delivering 126 new accommodation places.
“This includes more than 60 new places for people with a disability with ageing parent carers.”
Ms Jarratt said the new house in Cannonvale marked a significant expansion of disability services in the Whitsunday region.
“This is great news for disability services in the Whitsunday region,” Ms Jarratt said.
“The new purpose-built home in Abell Road will have an on-site carer to provide residents with around-the-clock support.
“That’s a great outcome for them and their families, and a further sign that this is a government which delivers for regional Queensland.”
Ms Palaszczuk said the State Government provides Compass Whitsundays with $843,998 a year to deliver respite, domestic assistance, personal care, social support and transport services.
“The State Government also provided Compass Whitsundays with $500,000 in 2010 to expand its respite centre in Cannonvale, which delivers services to 22 people,” she said.
