Queensland Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk has officially opened the Endeavour Foundation’s Post School Services building in Townsville, following a $500,000 refurbishment.
Ms Palaszczuk said school leavers with a disability in North Queensland would now be able to access improved facilities for Post School Services that would enhance their education, employment and social opportunities.
“Here in Townsville, the North Queensland Endeavour Foundation secured $500,000 in capital funds to renovate the building into a modern services facility,” she said.
“These renovations include new open plan activity rooms, a new kitchen and new disability accessible toilets and showers.
“The outside areas have been refurbished with a covered outside area, including a small garden area where people can relax.’’
Member for Townsville Mandy Johnstone welcomed the opening of the refurbished facility, saying it would benefit many school leavers in the region.
“These Post School Services will assist North Queensland school leavers with disabilities to experience a range of options and opportunities as they establish themselves as adults with much to offer our community.”
“I am pleased to support school leavers and their families to plan for the future, and assist students to set and realise their goals.”
“This may include strengthening their communication skills, learning how to use a computer or catch public transport, developing social, daily living and life skills or transitioning to work or further education,” Ms Johnstone said.
Ms Palaszczuk said the Bligh Government was committed to investing in services that supported people with a disability and their families and carers.
“This service is funded through the Bligh Government’s record commitment of more than $40 million to Post School Services,” she said.
“Last year some 210 young people and their families in North Queensland were supported with Post School Services – this financial year I am pleased to see that a further 30 young people will be assisted.
Ms Palaszczuk said the record funding had resulted in Post School Services being expanded in local communities across the state including Bundaberg, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton, South Burnett and North Burnett and Longreach.
