From Disabled World Government of Canada Supports Projects for Women and Youth in Manitoba By Status of Women Canada
The federal government is pleased to support two projects being provided by local organizations based in Manitoba. The first project will address the sexual exploitation of youth, specifically the trafficking of Aboriginal women and children, and the second will provide support to women caring for children with disabilities. The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today announced that the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs will receive $100, 000 for its project, Prevent Human Trafficking: Stop the Sexual Exploitation of First Nations Women and Children, which will develop partnership networks as well as other measures to prevent and protect women and youth from sexual exploitation and trafficking. The Association for Community Living - Manitoba will receive $20,860 for its project, Returning to Our Awareness - A Path of Empowerment for Women Caregivers, which will provide support groups for women caring for children with intellectual/developmental disabilities. "Our Government is taking action to support and protect women from across the country," said Minister Guergis. "That is why I am proud to announce funding for these two projects, one that will work to stop the exploitation of some of our most vulnerable women and youth, the other that will provide a group of very dedicated caregivers the invaluable opportunity to share experiences and expertise." "We know as First Nations that it is our collective responsibility to protect the most vulnerable among us. When we turn women and children into objects to be traded or sold, we fail in our own humanity," said Mr. Ron Evans, Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs. "Especially when it comes to raising children, women are often the primary caregivers," said Ms. Val Surbey, President of the Association for Community Living - Manitoba. "Raising a child with a disability brings its own unique challenges that can include significant stress and a sense of isolation. Our project will not only provide help and encouragement, it will also provide opportunities for these women to network, and to learn more about disability resources, services and programs." Funding for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs project comes from the Women's Partnership Fund, and funding for the Association for Community Living - Manitoba project comes from the Women's Community Fund. Both are components of the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada, a federal government agency working to promote equality for women and their full participation in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disabled World (www.disabled-world.com) provides a large range of worldwide health and disability information.
