Sleep Makes Your Memories Stronger

Scientists have found that sleep helps consolidate memories, fixing them in the brain so we can retrieve them later. Now, new research is showing that sleep also seems to reorganize memories, picking out the emotional details and reconfiguring the memories to help you produce new and creative ideas, according to the authors of an article in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Nickel is a type of silvery-white metal that is commonly mixed with other types of metal in order to produce alloys. As an example, nickel-iron, something that is used to manufacture stainless-steel, is one of the more common types of nickel alloys. Other types of nickel alloys are used to make everything from costume jewelry to coins; zippers, buttons, bra or girdle fasteners, hair-pins, eyeglass frames, pens, studs, paper clips, tools, keys, and more. Nickel may be bound tightly in stainless-steel, particularly surgical stainless-steel.

Treating Head and Neck Cancer

Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), a radiation therapy procedure pioneered at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) that precisely delivers a large dose of radiation to tumors, may effectively control and treat head and neck cancers when combined with the chemotherapy Cetuximab, according to researchers from UPCI. The results of the research will be presented today at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting in San Diego.

Shedding Light on Lupus with New Assessment Tool

A newly designed tool is helping researchers shed light on the quality of life (QoL) of children with lupus around the world, according to research presented at the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) annual meeting, held Nov. 7-11, in Atlanta. "Lupus is a significant disease with a major impact on QoL of children around the world. This is a chronic, unremitting disease that we need to get under better control," said Thomas J.A. I can move around my home, I work, and I've been able to travel. None of those things would have happened if it weren't for the power wheelchair that Medicare provided." Keli, now 27, works at the Tri-County Independent Living Center in Ogden, where she helps patients with mobility limitations overcome their challenges. "I tell people my story, and what I have had to overcome, and hope it will inspire them," says Keli, who a year ago was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Utah for 2010.

The Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly ( ASPREE ) study will assess not only whether aspirin can prolong life but also whether it can prolong a life free of physical disability and/or dementia for healthy older people. The study is now enrolling participants from the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Participants will be seen in the clinical research unit at the Regional Academic Health Center ( RAHC ) in Harlingen. The clinical research unit shares the first floor of the RAHC with the South Texas VA Health Care Center.
