All Abilities Playground Project - Queensland, Australia

The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring that all children, including those with a disability, have equal access to playgrounds so they can learn, grow and develop during play. All abilities playgrounds are places where children of all ages and abilities can experience fun and challenging play alongside their friends and family members. The project recognises the fundamental importance of play in the health, wellbeing and learning of all children, regardless of their age or ability.

Providing Students with a Safe Learning Environment

Committed to ensuring that all students have a safe environment in which to learn, free from harassment and discrimination, the Senate Democratic Majority passed the ‘Dignity for All Students Act’ (S1987B/ Duane). This legislation aims to provide all students with a safe school environment conducive to learning by putting an end to harassment and discrimination based on but not limited to race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, or sex.

3,000 Blind People Arrive in Dallas for NFB Convention

In 2004 the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) issued the Blind Driver Challenge, which challenged American colleges and universities to develop technology that would allow a blind person to drive. Virginia Tech's Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory answered the challenge and has been hard at work since 2006. The nonvisual interface technology that has been developed, including drive grips (gloves that use tactile vibrations to indicate which way to steer), will be on display and available for demonstration in the Showroom of Innovation.

Yellowknife Primary Care Centre Officially Open - Northwest Territories, Canada

Affordable Rental Housing for Persons with Disability - Wilkie Saskatchewan

Affordable rental housing at two Wilkie Independent Living Services (WILS) group homes officially opened today in Wilkie. The basement suites will help people with intellectual disabilities to live more independently and to have access to occasional living supports. "This project and others like it demonstrate our government's ongoing commitment to helping people with disabilities to build independence," Biggar MLA Randy Weekes said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.

Project of Baosteel Providing Aids to Disabled in Yushu China

Vietnam Enacts First Disability Law

Recently the National Assembly of Vietnam enacted the first comprehensive national law guaranteeing the rights of people with disabilities. The new law mandates equal participation in society for people with disabilities through accommodation and access to health care, rehabilitation, education, employment, vocational training, cultural services, sports and entertainment, transportation, public places, and information technology. This law is expected to have a direct impact on the growth of Viet Nam's economy, as inclusive policies expand opportunities for Vietnamese with disabilities to be productive and achieve economic independence.

Athletes Overcome Disabilities to Compete in Extreme Outdoor Challenge

Knee Injury Surgery Does Not Decrease Osteoarthritis Risk

Arthroscopic surgical repair of torn anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) or meniscal cartilage injuries in the knee does not decrease the chances of developing osteoarthritis, according to a new study published in the online edition and August print issue of the journal Radiology. A decade after the initial injuries were diagnosed using MRI, localized knee osteoarthritis was evident in patients, regardless of whether or not the injuries had been surgically repaired.

In this binding Ruling the Social Security Administration set out guidelines for adjudicators and judges to follow for claims based upon Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This Ruling removes at least one of the barriers faced by Claimants.

Younger Patients Opting for Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Traditionally, total hip replacement surgery was performed on the elderly, but these days, advancements in the procedure have patients opting for the surgery much earlier in life. At 42-years-old, Bernadette Pletcher is one such patient. The mother of three recently underwent total hip replacement surgery for pain caused by arthritis and the total loss of cartilage of her left hip that had developed from an old injury. "Just six weeks after surgery I was able to begin a moderate exercise regime which I increased with each passing day," said Pletcher. "Not only was my mobility restored but I'm grateful to keep up with my family once more."
