Molecule Identified that Increases Survival of Stomach Cancer Patients

"The high presence of microRNA 451 enhances the response to treatment with chemo-radiotherapy and increases the survival of patients with stomach cancer”, explained Dr. Jesús García-Foncillas, chief researcher of the Pharmacogenomics Laboratory at the Applied Medical Research Centre (CIMA) and Director of Oncology at the University Hospital of Navarra. This was one of the results presented at the IV Congress of the Spanish Society for Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomic, recently held at CIMA.

A short clip showcasing a few clips of the amputee BMX rider Kurt Yaeger. Kurt has also just finished shooting three flims, War Flowers (with Christina Ricci), Camel Spiders (with Brian Krause) and Tenderloin. Kurt is also on the disability board of SAG and AFTRA called PWD (performers with disabilities). The film Tenderloin needs several thousand people to que the film before they will release it. Help show the networks and the studios disabled actors can bring in audiences.

Silent Majority of Doctors Speak Out on ObamaCare, Challenge AMA

"We are witnessing an ever-increasing chorus of Americans - from think tanks to tea partiers to accountants - who are decrying the underhanded tactics" used to get the legislation passed, including the exploitation of the AMA's claim to speak for doctors. The St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Lighthouse for the Blind-St. Louis have joined forces to implement a program to increase low vision in-home services to individuals and families in the greater St. Louis region. Society President David Ekin, ACSW, LCSW, says, “This is a productive example of community non-profit organizations collaborating to share resources to expand low-vision services without duplication or redundancy to better serve the needs of visually impaired people in our region.

Health Reform Fails the Disadvantaged

A new study looking at the effects of the 2006 Massachusetts Health Reform on access to care, health status and ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in healthcare, shows that the legislation has led to improvements in insurance coverage as well as a decline in financial barriers to care. However, to date, it has not increased people’s access to a personal physician or improved their self-rated health. Neither has it reduced healthcare inequalities between ethnic or income groups.

Funding Boost for Parkinson's NSW

The funding – announced today by Deputy Premier and Minister for Health Carmel Tebbutt and Minister for Ageing and Disability Services Peter Primrose – will be provided over three years and support a range of activities including ‘Parkinson's Awareness Week'. “Parkinson's disease is the second most common degenerative neurological condition after Alzheimer's, with some 80,000 Australians currently diagnosed with the condition,” Ms Tebbutt said.

As a population we are ageing rapidly and in large numbers, while seeking ways to remain independent. Both those living with a disability and those who are faced with the challenges of ageing that desire and are able to lead an independent lifestyle make up roughly 25% of Canada’s population. Add to this the fact that only seven percent of Canadian senior’s will move into a long term care facility leaves 93% living alone own or with family and friends.

Deaf Teenagers Visit Number 10 Downing Street

The 15 teenagers, aged between 11 to 15 years old, had two days of jam packed fun starting with a trip down to London on the train. They enjoyed a ride on the London Eye, a tour around the Sea Life Aquarium and a bus ride to Covent Garden to watch street performer, followed by a meal out in Trafalgar Square. The next day was spent enjoying a film making workshop when the teenagers were given the opportunity to make their own DVD, involving filming, learning scripts, acting and directing.

Questions on Accessibility for UK TfL and Rail Operators

The Assembly’s Transport Committee will tomorrow question Transport for London ( TfL ) and Network Rail about the accessibility of London’s bus, Underground and rail networks, and how they are working to address problems faced by people with reduced mobility. The Committee is examining the experience of people with reduced mobility on public transport across the capital. How successful are current measures? What more could be done to make using the network easier for people who face challenges – including people with disabilities, older people, and parents with buggies?
