The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Disability Discrimination The role of the EEOC is to fairly investigate and accurately assess allegations related to charges and present a finding. The Commission has the authority to investigate charges of discrimination against employers who are covered by the law, and should it find that discrimination has happened, it will attempt to settle the charge. The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has the responsibility of enforcement of federal laws which make it illegal to discriminate against job applicants and employee's due to their race, color, religion, disability, sex to include pregnancy, nation of origin, age including and beyond forty years, or genetic information. Weiss and colleagues at the University of Ulm, Ulm, Germany have discovered that osteopontin (OPN) contributes to allergic contact dermatitis. They present these findings in the January 2010 issue of the American Journal of Pathology. Allergic contact dermatitis is a hyperreaction of the immune system to either allergens or irritants on the skin, such as poison ivy, nickel, or latex. Contact dermatitis results in large, burning, and itchy rashes, which can take anywhere from several days to weeks to heal. READ MORE... Osteopontin Contributes to Allergic Contact Dermatitis Device for Pain Therapy not Recommended for Chronic Lower Back Pain A new guideline issued by the American Academy of Neurology finds that transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS), a widely used pain therapy involving a portable device, is not recommended to treat chronic low-back pain, pain that has persisted for three months or longer, because research shows it is not effective. The guideline is published in the December 30, 2009, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The guideline determined that TENS can be effective in treating diabetic nerve pain, also called diabetic neuropathy, but more and better research is needed to compare TENS to other treatments for this type of pain.
