The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Announced on January 27, 2010, it is considered to be in a category between the smartphone and the laptop computer. Reaction to Apple's new iPad is mixed, with some technology sites praising it while others are a little more reserved in their enthusiasm. Information to hand states the Apple iPad has a 9.7-inch screen, weighs 1.5 pounds, Wi-Fi with a 3G option, and up to 10 hours of battery life. The iPad runs the iPhone OS and "almost all" iPhone apps and uses the ePub format for books.

Giant Cell Arteritis - Facts and Information

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a form of uncommon condition involving certain arteries in a person’s body that become inflamed. The condition is sometimes referred to as, ‘temporal arteritis,’ or, ‘cranial arteritis,’ because if often affects the arteries in a person’s scalp, near to their temples. The condition may; however, also involve additional arteries in a person’s head, neck, and arms, as well as other areas on occasion. Microscopic examination of the cells that narrow or block the person’s arteries reveal characteristic, ‘giant,’ cells which deprive the downstream tissues of an adequate blood supply.

Restless Legs Syndrome Medication

New data presented at the 62nd American Academy of Neurology annual meeting in Toronto, Canada, showed that patients with moderate to severe Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) using rotigotine achieved sustained improvements in symptoms over 5 years of treatment. "Many people with RLS will have spent months or years trying to get a diagnosis and find a treatment that can help them. So these 5-year results provide additional evidence that, once they start using rotigotine, people with RLS may experience long term relief from their symptoms, and a significant proportion may become symptom free," said Diego Garcia-Borreguero, MD, Director Sleep Research Institute, Madrid, Spain.

Radiation Therapy for Terminal Cancer Patients

A new analysis has found that a considerable proportion of patients with end-stage or terminal cancer do not benefit from palliative radiation therapy (radiotherapy) despite spending most of their remaining life undergoing treatments. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study indicates that greater efforts are needed to tailor appropriately palliative radiotherapy to patients with end-stage cancer.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy - Facts and Information

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a form of rare brain disorder that causes people to experience permanent issues with control of their balance and gait. The clearest sign of the disease in an inability on the part of the person to aim their eyes properly, something that happens due to lesions in the area of their brain that coordinates eye movements. Some people describe the effect as a, ‘blurring.’ People with PSP many times experience alterations in their behavior and mood, to include apathy and depression, as well as progressive mild dementia. The signs and symptoms experienced among individuals with the disease can vary greatly.

No Link Between Dyslexia and Lack of Musical Ability

There is no link between a lack of musical ability and dyslexia. Moreover, attempts to treat dyslexia with music therapy are unwarranted, according to scientists in Belgium writing in the current issue of the International Journal of Arts and Technology. Cognitive neuroscientist José Morais of the Free University of Brussels and colleagues point out that research into dyslexia has pointed to a problem with how the brain processes sounds and how dyslexic readers manipulate the sounds from which words are composed, the phonemes, consciously and intentionally.

Research Lays Guidelines for Real World Scholarship

A new paper lays out guidelines that can be used to develop and implement partnerships between academics and local communities to foster research efforts that address social problems. “The goal of the project was to take research out of our labs and offices and put it into the hands of communities in such a way that it could be used to address real world problems – such as addressing substance-abuse treatment needs or improving student achievement,” says Dr. Jocelyn Taliaferro, an associate professor of social work at NC State and co-author of the paper.
