Rate of Childhood Peanut Allergies Tripled

Results of a nationwide telephone survey have shown that the rate of peanut allergies in children more than tripled from 1997 to 2008. The data are reported in the May 12 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Led by Scott H. Sicherer, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, researchers surveyed a total of 5,300 households, representing 13,534 individuals in 2008, a response rate of 42 percent. The survey was previously conducted in 1997 and 2002, with a 52 percent and 67 percent response rate, respectively.

Whiff of Local Anesthetic may Replace Dentist Needle

Modern dentistry has eliminated much of the "ouch!" from getting a shot of local anesthetic. Now a new discovery may replace the needle used to give local anesthetic in the dentist's chair for many procedures. Scientists are reporting evidence that a common local anesthetic, when administered to the nose as nose drops or a nasal spray, travels through the main nerve in the face and collects in high concentrations in the teeth, jaw, and structures of the mouth.

Pennsylvania Begins Implemening Health Care Reform

Rendell today said that Pennsylvania has applied to manage the state's high risk health insurance pool that will be established under the federal health care reform law recently signed by President Obama. The program will help uninsured Pennsylvanians who have pre-existing conditions that have kept them from securing affordable coverage elsewhere.

Wayland Village Senior Apartments West Baltimore Maryland

Representatives from federal, state and local government joined Enterprise Homes, Inc. and partners Wayland Baptist Church CDC and Bon Secours Baltimore Health System to break ground for Wayland Village Senior Apartments in West Baltimore. Wayland Village will feature 89 affordable rental apartments for low- and moderate-income seniors and for disabled adults. The new senior building, located one block from the Wayland Baptist Church on Garrison Boulevard, will be designed and built to meet the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria, the first national standard in green affordable housing.

The year 1938 found Congress creating a program that enabled agencies servicing people who were blind to sell products to the federal government. By the time the year 1971 rolled around, the original Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act was amended to permit people with additional severe forms of disabilities to benefit as well. The Committee for Purchase From People Who Are Blind or Severely Disabled is the Federal agency that is authorized to administer the AbilityOne Program. The Committee has the responsibility for determining which products and services are suitable to be placed on its Procurement List for the federal government.
