Buddy Walk Raises Awareness of Down Syndrome

Information provided by Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care - Published: 2010-10-14

The Minister for Disability Services, Peter Primrose, has urged people to support Down Syndrome Awareness Week by taking part in one of the Buddy Walks in NSW during this month.

Mr Primrose said that Down Syndrome was the most common known cause of intellectual disability and occurred because of a chromosomal abnormality present at birth.

“There are around 6,000 people with Down Syndrome living in NSW and it affects around one in every 860 people born,” Mr Primrose said.

“People can gain more knowledge of Down Syndrome and help raise awareness by taking part in the Buddy Walks in various locations across NSW this month.”

The walks will be held in Wagga Wagga this Saturday; in Newcastle on Sunday; in Sydney on Sunday, October 24; and Wollongong on Sunday, October 31.

Although Down Syndrome Awareness Week ends on Sunday, the Buddy Walks are aimed at further raising awareness of the syndrome and will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the formation of Down Syndrome NSW.
