International Forum on Disability Management - California

Information provided by California Department of Industrial Relations - Published: 2010-09-14

This year's International Forum on Disability Management (IFDM) 2010: Collaborating for Success will provide an opportunity for the health, safety, workers' compensation and disability management communities to share knowledge and evaluate comprehensive disability management initiatives.

Hundreds of delegates from more than 30 countries will attend the forum on September 20-22, in Los Angeles.

This is the first time the event will be held in the United States. It will be hosted by the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) and the California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation, in collaboration with the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions.

"Hosting this event gives California the opportunity to lead the international community in efforts to ensure successful disability management," said DIR Director John C. Duncan. "This forum provides a unique opportunity for experts from around the world to learn from each other. We all share common goals -- to help those living with disabilities remain a productive part of the workforce, to better provide injured employees with the medical care they need and to build a stronger economy by fostering productive and stable workforces. This forum will help us reach those goals."

The IFDM 2010 forum will feature distinguished speakers including:

  • Dame Carol Black, Britain's National Director for Health and Work
  • Wolfgang Zimmerman, Executive Director of Canada's National Institute of Disability Management and Research
  • Dr. Nick Buys, Dean of Australia's Learning and Teaching Griffith University
  • Dr. Joachim Breuer, Director General of Germany's Social Accident Insurance
  • Dr. Susan Daniels, former Deputy Commissioner at the U.S. Social Security Administration
  • John C. Duncan, Director of California's Department of Industrial Relations (DIR)

The organizations that are currently partnering in this effort are:

  • American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine
  • Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada
  • California Consortium for Stay-at-Work and Return-to-Work
  • California Workers' Compensation Institute
  • Council on Employee Health and Productivity, National Business Group on Health

IFDM is the only global conference dedicated to the in-depth discussion of disability management. It began when a group of leaders gathered in Vancouver in 2002 to share best practices, measure and evaluate outcomes, and promote better public policy toward individuals with disabilities. Since then, a diverse group of employers, workers, risk managers, unions, practitioners, jurisdictional and local government agencies, the insurance industry, policy makers and the public travels to meetings to participate in presentations, discussions and workshops.
