Achieving Health Equity in the Era of Healthcare Reform

Information provided by Academy for Health Equity - Published: 2010-08-13

A key focus for the 2010 Academy for Health Equity conference - August 18-20 Denver, CO - conference to feature sessions led by top health disparity experts and government officials.

Leadership at The Academy for Health Equity (AHE) views the theme for this year’s conference as highly-timely and relevant. Implementation of the recently passed healthcare reform legislation is foremost in the minds of public health professionals. The conference agenda will cover the latest research and applications as they pertain to health disparities and inequities during this critical period of healthcare reform.

“Our conference focuses on critical public health policies and initiatives that should be incorporated in healthcare reform implementation. Healthcare consumers will need to learn far more about the healthcare system in order to obtain high quality care. Healthcare providers will need to understand how culture, language and health beliefs affect health outcomes. Our role is to identify and address these knowledge gaps and build bridges amongst all stakeholders to achieve health equity, says Audrey L. Burwell, Executive Director of AHE. “The health and well-being of generations is at stake and that is the reason AHE encourages combining inter-disciplinary, trans-disciplinary and community-based methods to achieve equity in health.” This year’s conference is a renewal of AHE’s commitment to helping underserved communities thrive in this new era.

The conference’s sessions will be led by health disparity experts and government officials and will cover topics such as: Global Health Reform; Using Patient Navigators to Improve Access to Care; Exploring Health Inequities in Integrated Communities, Workforce Diversity, Bioethics in Clinical Trials and Strategies to Achieve Health Equity.
