Jerry Lewis Labour Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy - Canada

Information provided by Muscular Dystrophy Canada - Published: 2010-09-06

Muscular Dystrophy Canada is hosting the 45th Annual Jerry Lewis Labour Day Telethon to support those living with a neuromuscular disorder.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada volunteers will be on standby to receive calls from Sunday, September 5, at 9pm EST to Monday, September 6, at 6:30 pm EST.

Funds raised will support Muscular Dystrophy Canada's mission of enhancing the lives of those affected with neuromuscular disorders through equipment and support programs, information and education, and research.

Muscular dystrophy is a progressive disorder; the needs of those affected are constantly changing. Many people with a neuromuscular disorder require our support with the purchase of necessary equipment. The average cost of assistive devices range from $4,500 for an electric hospital bed to $17,600 for a powered wheelchair.

More than 50,000 Canadians are affected by a neuromuscular disorder. There are more than 100 disorders covered under the umbrella of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Over time, many people with muscular dystrophy lose the ability to walk, speak, or ultimately breathe. For some, the disorder is fatal.

For the 10th year, Manulife Financial Corporation is returning as a sponsor! Manulife will provide one of their Toronto call centres for use as our national pledge centre.
