World Diabetes Day Events

By Diabetes Australia - Oct 27, 2009 6:24:09 AM

On the evening of 13 November, Diabetes Australia, along with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, will be hosting a World Diabetes Day Gala Dinner featuring a performance by Kate Ceberano.

On 20 December 2006, the United Nations (UN) passed an historical Resolution recognizing diabetes as a serious global health threat. It is the first time a non-infectious disease has been thus acknowledged.

The Resolution designates 14 November each year as the United Nations World Diabetes Day and calls on all nations to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment and care of people living with diabetes and those at risk of developing diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the most chronic diseases of childhood. It can strike children of any age including infants and toddlers. World Diabetes Day focuses on children and adolescents to raise awareness of the diabetes and its impact on children. Every child has a right to a long and healthy life.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide by the over 200 member associations of the International Diabetes Federation in more than 160 countries, all Member States of the United Nations, as well as by other associations and organizations, companies, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes and their families.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the alarming rise in diabetes around the world. In 2007, the United Nations marked the Day for the first time with the passage of the United Nations World Diabetes Day Resolution in December 2006, which made the existing World Diabetes Day an official United Nations World Health Day.
