3,000 special-education teachers, educators, speech-language pathologists, healthcare professionals and researchers from the US and around the world are expected to attend the International Dyslexia Association 60th Annual Conference.

The IDA conference is widely regarded as the premier professional development conference in North America discussing dyslexia and related learning disabilities.

The four-day program includes 150 one- and two-hour educational sessions, and ten full- and half-day symposia.

Research findings from Florida Center for Reading Research, will be presented in a full-day symposium chaired by Barbara Foorman, Director of FCRR, and Elizabeth Crawford, Director of Intervention Projects. Topics include Reducing Risk for Later Reading Disabilities, Individualizing Reading Instruction in Early Elementary Classrooms, and Assessment for Instruction in Reading and Supports for Teachers to Guide Instruction in Reading.

The RTI Action Network, National Center for Learning Disabilities, will present effective strategies, positive outcomes and essential components for implementation of Response-To-Intervention (RTI) programs in another full-day symposium, including policy issues, implementation procedures and assessment guidelines.

Sessions focusing on the emotional, social and self-esteem consequences of reading disorders--on both schoolchildren and adults--as well as screening and management of ADHD as a coexisting condition with dyslexia and the impact ADHD may have in reading acquisition. Fluency, English language learners, critical reading skills, phonemic and phonological awareness and written expression are among the many topics on reading and language acquisition.

Dana Buchman, noted fashion designer, parent of a dyslexic child and author of A Special Education, will give the keynote address at the Conference opening event Wednesday, November 11.

Conference presenters include internationally-known names in dyslexia research and practice-based education, including Dr. Charles Perfetti, co-Director of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center; G. Reid Lyon, Ph.D., former Chief, Child Development & Behavior Branch, National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, now Distinguished Professor of Education Policy & Research, SMU; and Joseph K. Torgesen, Ph.D., Director Emeritus of the Florida Center for Reading Research. Louisa Moats, Ph.D., Barbara Wilson, M.S.Ed., Louise Spear-Swerling, Ph.D., and Suzanne Carreker, M.S., will present a half-day symposium on Standards for the Training of Reading Specialists on Friday, November 13.

The Conference offers continuing education units (CEUs) for professionals in Education, Speech & Language, Counseling and other areas. More than 100 exhibitors are part of the Conference, including publishers, schools and multi-sensory learning programs.
