While America celebrates Deaf Awareness Week, the Netherlands celebrates World Deaf Day.
During my recent trips to Europe, I’ve been fortunate to develop relationships with people in Europe and as a result, I was asked to come and present in two different forums in the Netherlands for WDD. The main topic of my speech was about identity development and how I developed my identity as a deaf American.
Liverpool venues have been praised after a strong response to plans for an event discussing how to help disabled conference delegates, reports liverpoolecho.co.uk.
The event sold out within just a few days and was held at London Road's Gateway Conference Centre. It was designed to discuss how disabled conference delegates could be made to feel more comfortable at corporate events by encouraging broader disability awareness amongst staff and improving facilities. Disabled British adults have around £80 billion to spend, and more of this could be fed into the conference sector if disabled access was improved across the board.

Ireland - THE Government's decision to disallow teenagers with disabilities aged 16 and 17 from claiming disability allowance will only yield "a pittance" in funds for the Exchequer, it was claimed yesterday. Fine Gael spokesman on disability issues, David Stanton, said more than 2,000 children would be affected by the move, which would only represent a saving of 0.07pc of the welfare budget. "This shows that the most vulnerable of the most vulnerable have been targeted by Fianna Fail's vicious, cruel Budget," he said.
HOUSEHOLDS in Greater Manchester U.K. have until November next year to ensure they have a TV or set-top box capable of receiving digital signals.
Digital UK revealed that the switch-off of the analogue signal beamed across the Granada region from Winter Hill in Bolton will begin on November 4, 2009, when BBC2 will be switched off.
People who have not yet invested in a Freeview television or set-top box, or signed up to a cable or satellite service, have just over a year to ensure they can receive digital television signals. A government scheme funded by money from the BBC licence fee is being run to help people over 75 and some people on disability benefits. Those qualifying for help will pay £40 for a Digital UK representative to visit their home and ensure that they have at least one TV capable of receiving a digital signal.

In addition, the Unum LifeWorks Online website offers practical resources to enable users to be proactive and tackle their concerns before they impact on work and personal life.
The program is based on a best practice EAP service design which has worked extremely well for Unum and Ceridian in the United States.
Unum US and Ceridian have been partnering since 1992 and offer a similar integrated EAP and work-life service to over 39,000 customers. Unum’s work-life balance EAP in the U.S. offers many modes of access to the service including online, face-to-face and telephonic to accommodate generational preferences and convenience.
