The UK Autism Foundation had urged Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling to reach out to the vulnerable by increasing tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer’s allowance.

The UKAF has also been campaigning on home re-possessions and had called on Chancellor Alistair Darling to give  firm instructions to banks who are not listening to the Government and are re-possessing home of families with autism.

Whilst welcoming the 3 month reprieve, the UKAF has urged the Chancellor to extend this to 12 months if the recession goes beyond 2009 as many more families with autism will be struggling as a result of the economic downturn.

Ivan Corea said: "We welcome Chancellor Alistair Darling’s support for the vulnerable. However, if the recession is more long term and goes beyond 2009, parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome will need more help and support, in financial terms. The struggles are very real and many are suffering. We urge him to extend the time limit on re-possesssions of homes and extend it to 12 months."

The UKAF is committed to the poor, before the pre-budget report eighty-seven members of parliament of all parties signed an early day motion in the House of Commons (EDM 2407) supporting the call of the UK Autism Foundation for the Prime Minister and the Chancellor to suport the vulnerable.

The motion in the Palace of Westminster was tabled by the highly respected John Battle MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Poverty.
