Caldwell's floor hockey team took home silver medals after their final match Thursday as the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games continued. Team USA Blue, known locally as the Caldwell Wildcats, scored 2 to Kazakhstan's 7 in the third round between the two teams. Special Olympics floor hockey has only been played in Idaho for about a year and a half. Elordi said she would like to get enough teams together to form a regional league.
Vice President Joe Biden was in Boise, Idaho yesterday to attend a portion of this year's Special Olympics Winter Games. He caught five contenders in the freestyle pairs skating competition, then awarded medals to the athletes with the help of Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan. Vice President Biden honored what he called the "movement" for the rights of the disabled. His assurance that the cause would always have an advocate in this White House, announcing Kareem Dale as Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy. "It’s a big deal. I started off in the civil rights movement. This is a civil rights movement. This is a movement to make sure that we guarantee that all peoples in the world have the opportunity to succeed to the degree they are capable."
As part of the closing ceremony Tim Shriver, Chairman and CEO of Special Olympics handed out a honorary gold medal to a athlete from Russia. The speed skater was in his second lap around the track when he fell and ruptured his Achilles tendon but still managed to finish his race.
