Self Drive North West Province South Africa
By Mairead Foley Jan 1, 2009 10:28:41 AM The North West Province is located to the north of South Africa on the Botswana Border. It's bordered to the west by the Kalahari Desert, to the east by the Gauteng Province, the Free State to the south and it's home to the premier tourist resort of Sun City.
The North West Province is also known as the 'Platinum Province' due to the large resources of platinum. It's actually where 94% of South Africa's platinum comes from and 25% of its gold. Fancy a self drive tour of the area?
The Capital of the North West Province is a city called Mafikeng, which lies very close to the Botswana Border. Popular tourist destinations in the region include Sun City, Madikwe Game Reserve, Rustenburg Nature Reserve and Pilanesberg National Park.
If you're planning on discovering the area by rental car your best bet is to have it sorted before you arrive.
Sun City
Sun City is one of the world's premier casino resorts. It's about a 2 hour drive from Johannesburg and also boasts two of the country's best 18 hole golf courses. It offers an abundance of activities to keep everyone occupied as well as a multitude of attractions.
Madikwe Game Reserve
Madikwe Game Reserve is South Africa's largest Game Reserve. Officially opened in 1991 it has today over 8,000 animals and 27 species in the reserve and continues to grow.
Rustenburg Nature Reserve
Located approximately 100km from Johannesburg, and just south west of the town of Rustenburg, is Rustenburg Nature Reserve. Today it covers 4,500 hectares on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountains.
There have been 115 tree and bush species recorded in this mountain reserve as well as a number of very rare plants, 230 species of birds and 13 antelope species.
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is set in the crater of a long extinct volcano (last eruptions about 1,200 million years ago) making it an unusual and rare geological treasure. It's located in the Bojanala Region of the province near Sun City. Various sites throughout the 55,000 hectare park date back to the Iron Age and Stone Age. It's the country's 4th largest national park.
There is much to see and do in the North West Province. Here's an example of a self drive golfing and safari 3-day tour.
Day 1:
Arrive at Johannesburg International Airport and travel to the Sun City, South Africa's answer to Las Vegas! Sun City is approximately 187 km from Johannesburg.
Leave Johannesburg International Airport via the interchange and follow signs for the R21. Stay on the R21 until you reach Pretoria and then look for the M8 and follow signs to Sun City. Remain on the M8 for about 10km before joining the R513 for 23km and then merging with the R573 for another 10km before arriving in Sun City.
You can enjoy an overnight stay in one of the many top hotels in Sun City.
Day 2:
You can challenge your golfing skills at the 'Lost City Golf Course'. In the afternoon you can visit the Pilanesberg Game Reserve and why not take the evening off and check out the many sights and activities Sun City has to offer at your leisure? Stay a 2nd night in Sun City.
Day 3:
Reach new heights and take an early morning tour high in the South African skies with a hot air balloon tour…weather permitting of course! Here you'll get a bird's eye view over the park taking in the spectacular scenery for miles around. On landing you'll be treated to a glass of wine.
Again for all the golfing enthusiasts you will be treated to a round of golf at the Gary Player Golf Course. Enjoy your last evening at your leisure and again discover Sun City for yourself, Sun City is a city that really comes to life at night and here you will be spoilt for choice with the entertainment on offer.
Day 4:
Depart Sun City and travel to Johannesburg International Airport.
