This superluxurious town house is a wonderful example of what happens when traditional and modern combine to great effect.

Take a fancy Georgian townhouse, add a modern twist and you get Dublin's take on the boutique hotel. Sounds simple, right? Georgian houses do make great canvases, but it's really all about the artist, and this particular creation is pretty special indeed. The standard rooms aren't especially big, but they're beautifully appointed with elegant, contemporary furniture, king-size beds draped in Egyptian cotton and fancy bathrooms. The more interesting rooms are the six split-level mezzanine singles and doubles, which have a decent living area on the bottom floor next to a modern bathroom and the bedroom upstairs. Although not a split-level, the one suite is exceptionally spacious. Breakfast - a gourmet rendition of the traditional Irish fry or a more heart friendly continental buffet - is served in the elegant dining room. Sounds stuffy, right? Well, it's anything but: the staff are brilliant but personable, and that, we think, is what makes this place that little bit special.

Fodor's Review: Dublin is at its most beautiful when it wears its Georgian face, and the Pembroke, a superb example of classic 18th-century grandeur, captures the city on a very good hair day. Town house does not do justice to the splendor of the place, but does hint at the cozy, relaxed atmosphere. The fan-windowed front door leads into a stately reception area, complete with Grecian pillars. The bright, airy, high-ceiling rooms are all individually designed in a gentle clash of contempory chic and Georgian symmetry. Nearly every wall bears a striking piece of contemporary Irish art. The hearty breakfast -- including delicious homemade French toast and Omelettes if desired -- is served in the serene dining room.
