Synopsis: CarePredict is a new wearable device that helps others keep track of their aging parents health from a distance. CarePredict Tempo is a sensor worn by seniors which tracks not just activity, but also location within the home, learning normal patterns of living of an individual, and, finally, alerting loved ones when there is a potentially concerning change in the pattern. The device senses not only activities such as sitting, standing, and walking, but also location in the house, combining them to provide sophisticated readings on a loved one's changes in tempo. The readings are sent to caregivers via text or email with Tempo's mobile app.
Introduction
Satish Movva, inventor of the world's largest SaaS Home-care & Hospice platform and Founder of ContinuLink, is at it again with his new wearable invention that helps adult children keep track of their aging parents' health from afar.
Main Digest
Adults living in the sandwich generation often struggle to keep up with the demands of working, taking care of their parents, and raising family of their own - among others. Satish Movva created his new system with his own parents in mind, both of whom are over the age of 75 and aging in their own home. As a husband and father of three children, two of whom are infants, Movva is familiar with the challenge faced by approximately 10 million Americans.
"During my weekly visits to my parents," says Movva, "they had changes in behavior or activity levels which, if I had I been aware of them, I would have intervened to get them help before it became an emergency."
CarePredict is an organization based in Davie, Florida. Founded by Satish Movva, the company's team also includes Krishna Vedala, who led the construction of the sophisticated Tempo system, and a board of advisers that includes doctors, specialists, and healthcare entrepreneurs.
CarePredict Tempo
CarePredict Tempo is a sensor worn by seniors which tracks not just activity, but also location within the home, learning normal patterns of living of an individual, and, finally, alerting loved ones when there is a potentially concerning change in the pattern. Although the sensor is predicted to be used for seniors aging independently at home, Movva envisions Tempo also being used in group living facilities.
Tempo lets you spot health decline - sometimes before anyone senses something's wrong - by tracking small daily changes and comparing that to normal patterns. The device senses not only activities such as sitting, standing, and walking, but also location in the house, combining them to provide sophisticated readings on a loved one's changes in tempo. The readings are sent to caregivers via text or email with Tempo's mobile app.
"We try to find a balance between competing demands on our time," says Movva. "Any undue time spent on one reduces time available for the others. When taking care of our parents, if we can spend a little bit of time upfront to forestall a larger problem... it is well worth the investment."
FAQ's
What technology is in the wearable sensor? Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy? I imagine that's why you'd need room beacons - to extend range beyond 30'?
The wearable sensor uses BlueTooth LE for communication with the Communications hub to offload data to the cloud. We do not use BT in the room beacons.
What sensors are included? Accelerometer2D or 3D like Atlas Wearables? Temperature or Humidity like Basis B1 Band, which also monitors pulse and heart rate variability?
The wearable incorporates a 9-axis MEMS package - 3-axis accelerometer, 3 axis gyro and 3 axis compass/inclinometer. We do not measure any clinical or ambient metrics though we have the ability to. We did not want to measure clinical vitals as thats a regulated market and we wanted to stay in this iteration in the consumer non-medical segment. Our follow-on products for the healthcare industry will have additional sensors that meet regulatory standards
What battery life, and how to charge? Please describe how seniors actually use it.
In engineering we are seeing 30 days, design goal is 90 days per charge. Final product will use induction charging complying with the Qi standard so any Qi charging pad can be used. The wearable is worn on the wrist and is not taken off except for charging. The room beacons are affixed to each room of the house. These are line of sight beacons so there is no concern as with the radio type beacons that adjacent room beacons will cause false room identification. A communications hub is plugged into the wall in a central location. This hub speaks BT LE to the wearable sensor and speaks via cellular, wifi or Ethernet to the internet and passes data received from the wearable into the cloud and vice-versa.
Can it show activity by location "Spending more time in kitchen today"?
Thats precisely our model. We deduce behaviors by combining activity/motion classification with location. This allows us to not be intrusive like the ambient monitoring companies which places sensors in the living space (motion, infrared beams, accelerometers on refrigerator doors etc, switches on toilet seats). We can deduce a lot of activities of daily living because we have the location to provide context awareness. Its funny you mentioned spending time in the kitchen as a metric, thats actually what we have on our web site (www.carepredict.com) A major differentiator between us and the ambient monitoring folks is that since we monitor the individual our model works in homes with more than one person and it measures individual metrics as opposed to general metrics.
Can it monitor sleep patterns and determine REM & deep sleep?
We monitor lying down and location and can deduce quality of sleep but are not doing so right now. That's maybe a feature that makes it into the final version before shipping this fall.
Will there be any apps to accompany the email & text?
Yes, smart device apps for the loved ones to get a dashboard readout of the seniors activity as well as push notifications.
