There are many types of devices that can be used in the home to aid those with limited mobility. Theses home medical aids allow things like standing and sitting or using the bathroom to be achieved without outside assistance. Perhaps the most common home medical aid is the lift chair. Lift chairs were developed as an aid for people who had trouble standing on their own or sitting.

Up until the 1980's lift chairs were made by taking an existing recliner and adding a lifting mechanism to the base. This all changed when Golden Technologies and Pride Mobility began manufacturing custom made lift chairs. These chairs were reinforced to support the stress of lifting and more evenly distribute weight. The other main advantage is that the chair could be designed to fit the lift, rather than having to design the lift to fit the chair. This resulted in many advances in lift technology. Today many of the chairs manufactured by Pride and Golden have lifetime warranties on the lift mechanism and frame.

Modern lift chairs have come a long way from the chairs designed in the 1980's. Many models include heat and massage, which can be great for helping to relax muscles, improve circulation, and help with back pain. There are also many that use special stain resistant fabrics. These fabrics look and feel just like leather or suede, but are extremely resistant to most types of stains.

One other advance in lift chair technology is the battery backup.

Most lift chairs plug directly into the wall, but feature a backup power supply that is activated when the power goes out. Many people who are mobility challenged depend on their lift chair to stand and could not do so otherwise without assistance. The battery backup ensures that they will never be left without this precious resource.

Lift chairs utilize a simple and easy to use remote control to lift the chair and operate the back and leg rest.

Depending on the type of chair and the options that the chair has, this remote frequently only has two buttons. Generally, one button will lower the base of the chair, and then once the chair has been lowered it will lower the backrest and raise the footrest. When you are ready to stand the up button will raise the back and leg rests. Once they are both closed, the base of the chair will raise. This makes it very simple to operate with only one hand, and as an added security precaution, it is not possible to raise the chair without first raising the backrest and closing the foot rest.

Some chairs feature buttons that allow you to control the foot rest and backrest independently, but they will also not allow you to raise the chair without first closing the leg rest and raising the backrest. You must maintain constant pressure on the button to move the chair and the chair always moves at a very consistent slow pace, which also greatly adds to its safety.

Lift chairs can be a great way to ensure that you or someone you care about is never without assistance when it comes to standing up. They are very affordable and a reputable dealer will ship them to you for free.
