Main Document

AIM from AOL makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family wherever they are in the world. And it's completely free! AIM chat provides room to list up to 500 friends and contacts.

AOL Instant Messenger allows Internet users to communicate via private, personalized text messages, and indicates when friends, family members, and business colleagues are online. AOL Instant Messenger combines AOL's Buddy List and Instant Message features, enabling users to send and respond to messages immediately and the ability to share files, pictures and links etc.

Add your buddies' cell phone numbers in your AIM Chat Buddy List window. Sending a text message to a mobile device is easy.

AIM Voice Chat

Use AIM Talk for text messages or to voice chat with friends on your Buddy List feature. All that's needed is a computer with speakers and a microphone. A headset or USB phone and high-speed Internet connection are recommended, but optional. To make use of enhanced AIM Chat IM features such as voice and video, you will need such extras as a headset and a webcam.

Accessibility

AOL Chat and Freedom Scientific (www.freedomscientific.com) whose products include screen reading software for the blind, magnification software for those with low-vision, and other products for accessible scanning and reading, are happy to announce that screen reader support for AIM Messenger 6.1 will be available in JAWS 8.0. JAWS 8 is expected at the end of November. Currently AOL does not recommend use of AIM 6.1 with other screen reader products at this time.

ChatBots

AOL and some other companies supply robots on AIM which can receive messages and send a response based on the chatbots purpose. Bots can help with studying, like StudyBuddy or relate to children and teenagers, like Spleak or AOLSafetyBot, an AOL-run bot that provides information about staying safe online.

AIM Express

AIM Express, is implemented in DHTML and runs in a web browser, just like a webpage, it is intended for use by people who are unable or unwilling to install executable programs on their computers but still wish to use AIM Instant Messenger.
