Yahoo! Messenger is an advertisement supported instant messaging client (IM) provided by Yahoo.

The Yahoo Chat Messenger is provided free of charge and can be downloaded and used with a generic "Yahoo ID" which also allows access to other Yahoo services, such as Yahoo Mail and Yahoo chat etc.

Yahoo! Messenger is available for Windows, Macintosh, Unix and Mobile platforms.

The recent versions of Yahoo Messenger permit you to listen to Launchcast Radio, play Yahoo Games, and Yahoo Audibles which are fairly simple Flash movies, and notify you when you have upcoming events in your Yahoo Calendar.

Since Version 9.0 of messenger was released the interface was redesigned and ability added to to view Flickr photos and videos in the main chat window, you can now also import your friends from other e-mail and chatting networks such as MSN (Windows Live) by permitting messenger to search your other IM's, e-mail, and social networking accounts like Facebook and Myspace for friends that are also signed up on Yahoo IM. Yahoo messenger offers PC to PC, PC computer to Phone and Phone to PC service, file transfers, webcam hosting, text messaging service, and Yahoo chat rooms in various categories.

Yahoo Messenger can also alert you to new emails in your Yahoo Mail account or your Yahoo Personals account. You can also receive instant stock price alerts and weather updates.

Yahoo Messenger with voice chat allows you to carry on live conversations with friends and family by utilizing your computers speaker and microphone, plus drag-and-drop photo sharing. If you or any of your friends use the Yahoo 360 blogs platform, you can now check recent 360 blog updates from Messenger.

Once you have downloaded and installed Yahoo messenger you can use your webcam to see other users and to share live video with your friends and family (they will need Yahoo messenger installed on their computer also).

Offline messaging, or "offliners", allows online users to send messages to their contacts, even if their contacts are not signed in at the time. The sender's offline contacts will receive these messages when they next go online.

Not only does this Messenger serve as a very handy Net phone with excellent sound quality, it also lets you share searches, exchange photos, files, and blog entries while you are chatting.

Yahoo Messenger for Mac Computers

Yahoo Messenger 2.5.3 for Mac was released in 2003. In June of 2006 Yahoo Messenger for Mac 3.0b1 was released as a beta and included avatars, chat, display image viewing, BUZZ facility, and some other features comparable to those on the Windows version.

A beta version (rc4 released in May 2007) contained bugs, including a java bug when Safari 3 was installed that caused new messages to pop to the top of the window.

The current version is Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0
