Only one week remains for many Alabama workers who lost jobs as a result of the April storms to register for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.
To date, 5,862 Alabamians have applied for DUA. The state-administered, Federal Emergency Management Agency-funded program may provide benefits for workers who would not normally qualify for unemployment compensation, such as the self employed and farmers.
Workers with storm-related job losses must register for DUA within 30 days of a county's federal designation for FEMA Individual Assistance.
Here is a list of the deadlines to register in the following counties:
Autauga; Bibb; Blount; Calhoun; Cherokee; Choctaw; Colbert; Cullman; DeKalb; Elmore; Etowah; Fayette; Franklin; Greene; Hale; Jackson; Jefferson; Lawrence; Limestone; Madison; Marengo; Marion; Marshall; Morgan; St. Clair; Sumter; Tallapoosa; Tuscaloosa; Walker; Washington; and Winston: May 31.
Chilton, Coosa, Pickens, Shelby and Talladega: June 1
Lamar and Lauderdale: June 2
Chambers, Clarke and Perry: June 3
Monroe: June 7
Individuals must have been working or residing in one of these counties to be eligible for DUA.
If a survivor is eligible, benefits can last up to 26 weeks from the day of the April 28 federal disaster declaration.
Workers who lost their jobs because of the disaster may qualify for DUA because of at least one of the following reasons:
Disaster-related injury that prevents a worker from performing his or her job;
Workplace was damaged or destroyed during the disaster;
Worker's transportation is unavailable due to the disaster;
A workplace cannot be reached because of the disaster;
A worker was about to begin the job, but was unable to because of the disaster; and
A worker derived most of his or her income from areas affected by the disaster, whether he or she worked for himself or herself or for an employer, and his or her business is down as a direct result of the disaster.
Workers who think they may be eligible for DUA should call toll free 866-234-5382 or visit the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations website at www.dir.alabama.gov to file a claim.

FEMA's temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan.
