Below is a statement released today by Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU ULTCW, urging Congress to vote to extend unemployment benefits.

"If Congress decides not to extend unemployment benefits tomorrow, nearly 411,000 Californians could lose unemployment benefits by the end of the year, including around 185,000 who would lose benefits immediately, according to the National Employment Law Project," says Laphonza Butler, President, SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW).

"That's over 400,000 Californians across the state who will struggle to pay their bills or put food on the table for their children. We encourage Congress to extend benefits, as the majority of Americans and Californians want and need."

A poll released by Hart Research Associates on November 15, 2010, clearly indicates that a majority of Americans support the continuation of unemployment benefits until the jobless rate drops significantly. For details on the research, visit

SEIU ULTCW (United Long Term Care Workers) represents 178,000 long term caregivers (nursing home workers and in-home caregivers) throughout California and is a leading advocate for low-income seniors and disabled citizens who rely on long term care services. SEIU ULTCW is the largest union of long term caregivers in California, and the second largest SEIU local in the nation.
