Over 400,000 Californians Affected if Unemployment Benefits Not Extended

Below is a statement released today by Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU ULTCW, urging Congress to vote to extend unemployment benefits.

"If Congress decides not to extend unemployment benefits tomorrow, nearly 411,000 Californians could lose unemployment benefits by the end of the year, including around 185,000 who would lose benefits immediately, according to the National Employment Law Project," says Laphonza Butler, President, SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW).

"That's over 400,000 Californians across the state who will struggle to pay their bills or put food on the table for their children. We encourage Congress to extend benefits, as the majority of Americans and Californians want and need."

A poll released by Hart Research Associates on November 15, 2010, clearly indicates that a majority of Americans support the continuation of unemployment benefits until the jobless rate drops significantly. For details on the research, visit
