Disability RMS Named One of the Best Places to Work in Maine; Ranked #1 in Large Company.

Disability RMS, the nation's leading provider of turnkey disability risk management products and services, today announced it has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Maine by the Best Companies Group (BCG), which was formed to identify and recognize companies nationwide that stand out in workplace excellence. Disability RMS was honored as the top ranking large-size employer at an awards dinner on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at the Augusta Civic Center. Only 22 companies were recognized in Maine.

Employee survey responses identified numerous positive benefits of working for Disability RMS which resulted in the company being honored. Employees expressed confidence in senior leadership strength, an understanding of the value of their roles and the relationship to the company's success, pride in working for the organization, trust among colleagues and an appreciation for a collaborative work environment.

"It is an honor to be recognized as one of the best places to work in Maine but to receive the top ranking in the large company category is truly rewarding," said John Roberts, president, Disability RMS. "I attribute this accomplishment to the company's ability to maintain its unique, small-firm culture despite experiencing double-digit growth in the last five years. This culture allows Disability RMS to attract and retain the most talented and highly qualified employees dedicated to providing customer service excellence."

For several years, the Best Companies Group has delivered its program designed to identify companies that excel at workplace greatness to states across the country. In 2005, BCG partnered with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Maine State Council, The Maine State Department of Labor, the Maine State Chamber, Employment Times, Mainebiz and JobsInME.com to initiate the Best Places to Work in Maine program. This year's Best Places to Work awards ceremony marks the first for the state of Maine.

The program's objective is to:

honor companies that show dedication to their employees' growth and quality of life
develop definitive information to help existing Maine companies retain their workforce
promote Maine's best employment opportunities to attract new workers
distinguish Maine businesses that attract and retain Maine's most talented employees

The BCG competition recognizes companies in two categories: medium sized companies (25-199 employees) and large-sized employers (200 employees or more). The program is open to all publicly or privately held companies, either for profit or not-for-profit. To be considered, companies must have at least 15 employees that work in Maine. Nominated companies are surveyed by a professional research firm, Modern Think, LLC engaged by BCG, which analyzes the results of employer and employee surveys. Seventy percent of the award decision is weighted on the employee survey responses. In addition, extensive data on company policies, practices and demographics is assessed.

At Disability RMS, 250 employees were randomly surveyed to analyze the overall culture and morale of the company. The employees were asked to complete a 17-page questionnaire addressing a broad range of topics. There were questions as involved as "Describe in detail specifics of your long-term disability benefit," and as simple as whether the employer offers free coffee. There were also questions about mentoring opportunities, fitness program availability, dress code, vacation time and the percentages of women and minorities in the employee population.

Best Companies Group (BCG) is a division of Journal Publications Inc. (JPI), a publishing and events company located in Harrisburg, Penn. JPI publishes the Central Penn Business Journal, Central Penn Parent, Next Magazine and a host of other well-respected publications.

Disability RMS is the nation's leading provider of turnkey disability risk management products and services with $400 million of disability premium under direct management. Disability RMS, located in Westbrook, Maine, has more than 350 employees with the specialized product knowledge and service skills required to succeed in today's complex risk protection market.
