The Federal Savings Bank is informing VA's that Virginia, Michigan, Florida and Montana are all working toward important initiatives for disabled veterans. These will be additions to what is already offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The VA provides disability compensation to veterans whose disabilities are a result of a disease or injury that was incurred or made worse during service. It is tax-free monetary aid for veterans who qualify and need help with their finances. VA home loans and other housing benefits are also available for veterans with disabilities.

Virginia

In Suffolk, Va., disabled veterans may soon be eligible for personal property tax discounts. As reported by the Suffolk News Herald, the City Council voted to consider the issue after a petition from two disabled veteran residents. Suffolk is one of the few localities in its area that does not offer discounts. Most nearby towns give discounts from about 30 percent to almost 100 percent.

Michigan

Up in The Great Lakes State, property taxes could be completely eliminated for certain disabled veterans. The Michigan Senate is proposing that veterans classified as 100 percent disabled should be exempt from owing property taxes, according to Michigan Radio. Proponents estimate that the measure would include about 8,000 state veterans. "It does not require the locals to do this," Senator Glenn Anderson told the source. But "it could be the difference between [veterans] living in their own home or being homeless."

Montana

Senator Jon Tester is the only member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee from Montana. He recently introduced two different bills in the Big Sky Country that will help disabled veterans. The first proposes that all "catastrophically disabled" veterans get reimbursed for medical travel costs so they can put their health before financial worries. Tester's other initiative seeks to increase cost-of-living aid for disabled veterans in the state. The increase would correspond with the Social Security's Cost-of-Living Adjustment, raising general disability compensation and survivor benefits.

Florida

Finally, Miami's Center for Independent Living in South Florida is receiving $20,000 for a new disabled veterans initiative, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. The center recently started a program called INVEST (Innovate and Navigate Veterans' Employment via Support & Training). It provides peer support, counseling, housing assistance, job training and other aid to disabled veterans in the Miami area. The Disabled Veterans National Foundation donated the money to help INVEST improve its resources and reduce veteran homelessness, hunger and instability.
