The drastic budget cuts of 2010 will devastate many children with reading disabilities. If parents of such children don't know how to identify their children's needs, how to resolve conflicts with schools, and how to use federal laws to get their children the services needed to overcome their reading disabilities, their children's reading disabilities may well intensify. Reading Disabilities: Beating the Odds, a recent book by two nationally known experts, shows parents how to get their children the help they need, despite the cuts of 2010.

Even in good economic times, children with reading disabilities have been far more likely than their average achieving peers to fail their subjects, be held back, suffer attention and discipline problems, develop emotional problems, drop out of school, become chronically underemployed or unemployed, or wind up in prison (Reading & Writing Quarterly, 24(2), April 2008, and 26(1), January 2010; M. The Authors

Howard Margolis and Gary G. Brannigan are nationally recognized scholars with a wealth of practical experience in helping children with disabilities and getting them the services they need. Howard is Professor Emeritus of Reading and Special Education at the City University of New York. Widely published, he is former editor of the Reading Instruction Journal and the Journal of Psychological and Educational Consultation; for two decades he has edited the Reading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties. He was a special education Hearing Officer for New Jersey, a Review Officer for Delaware, and has frequently helped parents and schools to constructively settle disputes. In 2006, Queens College's Department of Educational and Community Programs honored his work by creating The Howard Margolis Advocacy and Social Justice Award. Gary is Professor of Psychology and Chancellor's Scholar at the State University of New York-Plattsburgh. He has published 14 books and has written more than 100 articles for psychologists, teachers, and parents. As a school and clinical psychologist with a keen interest in family dynamics and children's needs, Gary has counseled hundreds of children and families.
