Introduction

Despite the Budget Cuts of 2010, Children with Reading Disabilities Can Get Help.

Main Digest

The drastic budget cuts of 2010 will devastate many children with reading disabilities. If parents of such children don't know how to identify their children's needs, how to resolve conflicts with schools, and how to use federal laws to get their children the services needed to overcome their reading disabilities, their children's reading disabilities may well intensify. Reading Disabilities: Beating the Odds, a recent book by two nationally known experts, shows parents how to get their children the help they need, despite the cuts of 2010.

Even in good economic times, children with reading disabilities have been far more likely than their average achieving peers to fail their subjects, be held back, suffer attention and discipline problems, develop emotional problems, drop out of school, become chronically underemployed or unemployed, or wind up in prison (Reading & Writing Quarterly, 24(2), April 2008, and 26(1), January 2010; M. Lipson & K. Wixson, Assessment & Instruction of Reading and Writing Difficulties, 2009, Allyn & Bacon). Yet schools often provided these children inadequate instruction or denied them the services needed to overcome their disabilities. With the budget cuts of 2010, the situation is even more dire. Reading Disabilities: Beating the Odds, shows parents how to work with schools, and if necessary, challenge them, so their children get what they need, can succeed academically, and have a good chance of becoming successful citizens

The Reviews

Parents, special education attorneys, and scholars have praised Reading Disabilities: Beating the Odds (www.reading2008.com). Here is a small sample of their comments:

It is all in this book! As a parent of three children (two who are identified Learning Disabled) I highly recommend this book.... I have come across all of the books about reading and reading disabilities in the last seven years. This by far is the most comprehensive, thoughtful book, which can be used as guide for both teachers and parents confronted with these issues. The book provides excellent advice and resources from what to look for in a struggling reader to dealing with Child Study Teams.... A wealth of invaluable information. (Mom2Three, 5 Stars, Amazon)

This book is wise and wonderful. It rocks with practical, positive, and easily readable text that goes far beyond information. It coaches parents, too! By using critical questions, checklists, bulleted points, and guided action plans, seasoned experts Margolis and Brannigan lead parents through the complex maze of reading and learning problems.... I plan to use it in my practice! (Mary Fowler, Teacher Trainer & Author, 5 Stars, Amazon)

I love the book. Simply written with incredible depth and breadth. Parents will feel like they are getting support from a trusted friend. (Gloria Lodato Wilson, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Special Education, Hofstra University)

A wonderful book! Brilliant, comprehensive, easy to read. It attacks important questions from all sides. It prepares parents to meet their children's learning problems head on. (Ronee Groff, former president of the Learning Disabilities Association of New Jersey)

A great job of making a complicated situation easy to understand and digest for the layperson. As a special education attorney and a parent of a child with a reading disability, your book [is]... a must read for parents and educators!.... A wonderful guide! (Staci Greenwald, Esq., Special Education Attorney, 5 Stars, Barnes&Noble)

Great book and so practical for... parents. (William Rupley, Ph.D., Executive Editor, Reading Psychology, Professor and Distinguished Research Fellow, Texas A&M University)

This book is a wonderful resource for any classroom teacher.... [It's] the perfect guide to show parents how to better understand and get help for the struggling learner.... Walks the parent through the complexities (Psychology Today)
