Australian Kakadu Plum May Help Treat Alzheimer's Disease

The Kakadu Plum, also known as Billygoat, Gubinge and Bush Plum, has the highest natural source of vitamin C of any plant in the world. It also has superior antioxidant properties.

Terminalia ferdinandiana, also called the gubinge, billygoat plum, Kakadu plum or murunga, is a flowering plant in the family Combretaceae, native to Australia, widespread throughout the tropical woodlands from northwestern Australia to eastern Arnhem Land. The fruit is used as bush tucker by Australian Aboriginal people. The roundish, light green fruits are usually eaten raw, although they can also be made into a jam. It has a high concentration of vitamin C in its fruit: recorded concentrations of 2300-3150 mg/100 g wet weight and occasionally as high as 5300 mg/100 g, compared with 50 mg/100 g for oranges, ranks among the highest known of any natural source. The Kakadu Plum also contains phytochemicals such as gallic and ellagic acids. Gallic acid has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activities and also shows anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, anti-mutagenic and anti- bronchodilatory activities. Ellagic acid has anti-carcinogenic effects against a wide range of carcinogens in many human tissues.

Researchers believe that the Kakadu Plum could be one of the most powerful treatments for Alzheimer's disease.
