Disabled World History 2004-2026

Disabled World was founded in May 2004 by Ian Langtree and is operated by Auscan Alliance Corp. What began as a disability news and information site has grown into an internationally cited reference - with content used by the United Nations, the Library of Congress, U.S. state agencies, and university library systems - while remaining an independent, family-operated publication. This page traces that journey.

The 2000s: Founding and Growth

May 2004 - Disabled World Launches

Ian Langtree founds Disabled-World.com under Auscan Alliance Corp. with a mission to build an international online community for people with disabilities. The site begins publishing disability news, statistics, and practical resources, with a primary focus on the more than 54 million Americans identified as disabled by the U.S. Census Bureau.

August 2004 - "Towards Tomorrow!" Adopted as Our Slogan

The site adopts its enduring banner Towards Tomorrow! - a declaration that disability rights and inclusion are not distant ideals but an active, collective movement being built today. The slogan reflects the site's commitment to progress over passive hope.

2005–2006 - Content Expands Across Key Topics

Coverage broadens to include assistive technology reviews, disability employment, education and scholarships, accessible travel, and senior disability issues. Volunteer writers and contributors from educational institutions begin submitting material, expanding the range and depth of coverage available to readers.

2007 - Health Calculators and Reference Charts Introduced

Free medical calculators and reference tools go live, including height-to-weight ratio charts for adults and children - resources that will later be cited by dozens of peer-reviewed studies in pediatrics, nutrition, and public health. The U.S. Social Security Disability Benefits Calculator and Disability Plan Evaluation Calculator are also added, helping readers navigate benefits in plain language.

2008 - Editorial Framework Formalized

The site publishes its formal About page, mission statement, and contributor guidelines, establishing clear editorial standards. The Social Model of Disability - developed by disabled people in the 1970s - is explicitly adopted as the philosophical foundation of all content on the site.

The 2010s: Recognition and Citations

2010 - "Definitions of Models of Disability" Published

Ian Langtree publishes what becomes one of Disabled World's most academically influential articles. As of 2026 it has been cited by 31 scholarly works in disability studies, education, and social policy - the beginning of Disabled World's formal presence in the peer-reviewed literature.

2014 - United Nations Cites Disabled World Statistics

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs includes Disabled World as a cited source in its official Factsheet on Persons with Disabilities, alongside the WHO, World Bank, UNESCO, and ILO. Three statistics from our disability statistics pages appear in the factsheet, including data on disability and armed conflict, women with disabilities, and average years lived with disability.

2016 - Library of Congress Cites Four DW Articles

The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), a division of the Library of Congress, references four Disabled World articles in its publication Video Gaming Accessibility, covering accessible games, adaptive controllers for upper-limb amputees, VR broadcasts for veterans with disabilities, and text-based virtual world viewers.

2018 - University Library Systems Adopt DW as a Resource

Multiple university libraries formally incorporate Disabled World into their research guides, including SUNY Oneonta's James M. Milne Library (disability awareness and hidden disability definitions), Cerritos College Library (biographies of people with disabilities), and San Diego Mesa College Library (DisAbility Awareness guide).

2019 - California DDS Adds DW to Wellness Toolkit

The California Department of Developmental Services lists Disabled World among its recommended nationwide resources in its official Wellness Toolkit, describing the site as "an independent Health and Disability news source that brings together information from worldwide disability organizations, governments, and educational institutions."

The 2020s: Two Decades and Counting

2020 - COVID-19 Coverage for the Disability Community

Disabled World expands reporting to cover the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with disabilities - including policy changes to Social Security and Medicare, access to healthcare, and emerging research on vulnerability, long-term effects, and the experience of disabled people during lockdowns.

2022 - Height-to-Weight Chart Reaches 41 Scholarly Citations

The Average Height to Weight Chart: Babies to Teenagers becomes Disabled World's most-cited work in the academic literature, referenced by 41 peer-reviewed studies across pediatrics, nutrition, and public health - reflecting the site's value as a practical reference source well beyond the general disability readership.

2024 - Twenty Years of Publishing

Disabled World marks two decades of continuous publication. From a single-founder site launched in 2004, it now serves 70 million Americans with disabilities and 1.3 billion people worldwide, with content cited by international institutions and woven into the scholarly record of disability studies - all while remaining an independent, family-operated publication.

2025 - "Models of Disability: Types and Definitions" Updated

A fully revised edition of the flagship disability models article is published, reflecting fifteen years of development in the field. Within months it accumulates nine new scholarly citations, demonstrating continued demand for accessible, authoritative explanations of disability theory for students, educators, and researchers.

2026 - Citation Transparency Page Launched

Disabled World publishes Who Cites Disabled World, a verified record of institutional citations from the UN, Library of Congress, state government agencies, university libraries, legal publications, and disability organizations - formalizing the site's commitment to editorial transparency after 22 years of independent publishing.
