Synopsis: Global investments in disability tech and market growth promise a transformative future, positioning disabled individuals as a thriving and privileged demographic in society.

Why it matters: This article presents a unique perspective on the future of disability care and technology. It argues that the growing market for assistive technologies, driven by an aging population and increasing numbers of people with disabilities, will lead to significant improvements in the lives of disabled individuals. The article suggests that this economic shift will transform disabled people from a marginalized group to a privileged one, as businesses invest heavily in developing products and services to meet their needs. The piece offers a thought-provoking analysis of how market forces and profit motives might reshape societal attitudes and support for people with disabilities. It contrasts current government-led efforts with potential future business-driven innovations, suggesting that the latter could be more transformative. By framing disability as an "attractive reason for investment," the article challenges readers to consider how economic incentives might lead to rapid advancements in assistive technologies and improved quality of life for disabled individuals - Disabled World (DW).

Introduction

Helplessness is becoming an attractive reason for investment. People live longer, but this life is often characterized by the loss of some of the body's capabilities. Compensation for these losses is becoming the mainstream of the world economy. Sooner or later, this will change the lives of disabled people. It will make them a privileged part of society similar to the part of which the very rich people are now. But for now, disabled people do not suspect this. And an article telling about this can be a wonderful gift for the New Year!

Main Item

Lifestyle of Disabled People Today

The year 2024 is ending and soon the USA will have a new president. These are well-known events. But this will not change the lives of disabled people radically.

"That is why my Administration has worked to uplift people with disabilities in everything we do. My American Rescue Plan provided $37 billion to strengthen home-based services so that more people with disabilities have the option to live independently at home. My Bipartisan Infrastructure Law makes historic investments in making transit, rail, and airports more accessible, so that people with disabilities can commute and travel with dignity," said the 46th President of the United States JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR. December 3, 2024.(1)

Before him, presidents also spent huge amounts of money from the budget on the needs of the disabled. But...

Disabled people continue to live as before. And this life can hardly be called ideal. People with disabilities are characterized by worse socio-economic characteristics than people without disabilities. The lives of disabled people improve only if the life of the whole society improves. The lives of disabled people necessarily worsen if the life of the whole society worsens. But disabled people always live worse than non-disabled people. Obviously, it is impossible to fix this with the help of the government. This happens because disabled people are closely connected with society. This is perfectly shown in the study "Annual Report on People with Disabilities in America: 2024"(2) But we will not detail this sad information during the holiday season.

It would seem that such dependence of disabled people on society is natural. But this seems so at first glance. In fact, this dependence is not an axiom. If you look at the dynamics of socio-economic indicators of other groups of society, you can see amazing things. For example, super rich people become even richer, while poor people become even poorer. That is, these two groups of the population are moving in opposite directions.

Thus, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) study notes that in 1989, 1% of American households controlled 30% of national wealth. In 2016, the richest 1% of households controlled 38.6% of national wealth. Over the same period, the share of national wealth owned by 90% of US households decreased from 33.2% to 22.8%.(3) Incredible!

As we see, life can be amazingly beautiful. But what is the reason for these magical transformations? Of course, it is not the state budget. It is a free market economy.

Lifestyle of the Disabled Tomorrow

The fact that the standard of living of disabled people will change can be understood by reading the best business press in the world. Only the information that is important for making a profit is published there. Disabled people have begun to attract the attention of big business. It smells of money! This money is not yet in your pockets. But soon this capital will come to your home. "Disability tech goes mainstream" is the headline of an article in the Financial Times.(4) This is not the only example. But a very convincing example.

Big business invests huge amounts of money in developing products and services for people with disabilities. After all, the number of potential customers is constantly increasing. Currently, the number of people in need of assistive technologies is estimated at 1 billion people.(4) However, by 2050, this figure will increase to 3.5 billion people. (5) Incredible! This guarantees growth in sales of assistive technologies and increased profits. In 2022, the assistive technology market was estimated at $21.95 billion. However, by 2030, this market will increase by a third and reach $31.22 billion.(5)

This is a gigantic and dynamically growing market! Of course, disabled people do not have as much money as non-disabled people. But fortunately God invented "lobbying". Companies creating proposals will take care that state budgets create solvent demand through subsidies, grants, etc. If this were not the case, the development of goods and services would not be done! Business does not operate at a loss. Business is created to make a profit.

Competition in the global economy is constantly getting tougher. The number of people who want to earn money is increasing faster than the number of available opportunities. In the current situation, creating new opportunities for earning money is becoming natural. There are a lot of disabled people. But throughout the history of mankind, this category of people could not please business with a big profit. Increasing the solvency of disabled people by redistributing budget funds is an effective idea for making a profit and developing the national economy of any state!

How this will be done is not so important. What is important is something else. For the first time in the history of mankind, disabled people will become a group of society that will be attractive to big business. This will guarantee an improvement in the lives of disabled people. And this will be done at the expense of other groups of consumers who have already exhausted their potential. It will become possible for disabled people to move in different directions with society. At some point, they will become a privileged group of the population. This group will be partially similar to the group of the richest people. Only the purchasing potential of disabled people will be greater. After all, there are billions of disabled people. These people are the hidden reserve of humanity. Using these people is a guarantee of the prosperity of the world economy.

In many countries, politicians are starting to work in this direction. You can find many examples of this.(6) Currently, the actions of politicians are not coordinated on a global scale. However, the coming to power of the 47th President of the United States will speed up this process. Donald Trump is an excellent businessman and understands what business needs... And business needs solvent disabled people.

Happy New Year. May all your dreams come true.
