In 2007, American Idol held tryouts at Omaha, Nebraska. Vichay was an American Idol contestant, making it past the first round and being the first deaf person to audition. He was dismissed from the second round due to a permanent judge's decision. As a result, he found fame later in life, after auditioning for American Idol. He became the first Asian-American deaf entertainer and important deaf figure in the show's history, and was named on the DW Famous Deaf People List.
