Synopsis: Names of famous individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or who lived with the condition during their lifetime. PTSD can be alienating and lonely, and substantially more prevalent than most people think. Women are more likely to have post-traumatic stress disorder than men. If you have disturbing thoughts and feelings about a traumatic event for over a month, if they are severe, or you feel you are having trouble getting your life back under control, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. Getting treatment as soon as possible can help prevent PTSD symptoms from getting worse.
Introduction
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is a form of anxiety disorder, defined as a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event, either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include disturbing thoughts, feelings, or dreams related to the events, mental or physical distress to trauma-related cues, attempts to avoid trauma-related cues, alterations in the way a person thinks and feels, and an increase in the fight-or-flight response. PTSD can occur in people of any age, including children and adolescents, though not everyone who experiences trauma will develop PTSD.
Main Digest
Trauma survivors often develop depression, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders in addition to PTSD.[33] More than 50% of those with PTSD have co-morbid anxiety, mood or substance use disorders. For decades, neuroscientists and physicians have tried to get to the bottom of the age-old mystery of post-traumatic stress disorder, to explain why only some people are vulnerable and why they experience so many symptoms and so much disability.
