Synopsis: Mattress size measurement charts in both inches and centimeters for all popular mattress sizes for US, UK, EU, RV, and trucks with sleeper cabs. To determine the dimensions of a mattress, use a tape measure to measure the dimensions from head to foot for the length, from side to side for the width, and top to bottom for the depth. Most mattresses should last between 7 and 10 years. However, several variables influence mattress lifespan. The original build quality of the mattress, materials used, and even the sleepers' weight and sleeping styles can affect a bed's longevity.
A mattress is a large, usually rectangular pad designed to support a lying person. It is intended to be used as a bed or on a bed frame as part of a bed. Mattresses may consist of a quilted or similarly fastened case, usually of heavy cloth, containing materials such as hair, straw, cotton, foam rubber, or a framework of metal springs. Mattresses may also be filled with air or water.
Buying a new mattress is not a one-size-fits-all situation; evaluating your individual needs is essential. If you have a history of back pain or sleep conditions, you must select the right mattress size and be sure you will be comfortable with your new mattress.
Measuring the Size of a Mattress
To determine the dimensions of a mattress, measure it from head to foot for the length and from side to side for the width. It may be helpful to measure the depth of the mattress as well, from the bottom where it rests on the box spring to the top. Depth becomes important if you have a larger or smaller mattress than normal. That's because standard bedding is sewn to accommodate a standard mattress depth (no more than 9 inches). Use a tape measure to determine the size of your mattress and box spring.
- Measuring the Width: Measure the width of the mattress from side to side. Repeat for box spring if necessary.
- Measuring the Length: Measure the length from the head of the mattress to the foot of the mattress. Repeat for box spring if necessary.
- Measuring the Height (Depth): Measure from the bottom, where it rests on the box spring, to the top of the mattress, including any pillow top. Repeat for box spring if necessary.

U.S. and Canada Mattress Sizes Chart
|Mattress Sizes and Dimensions Chart|
|Mattress||Inches and Centimeters|
|Crib||27.25" Wide x 51" Length - (69.2cm Wide x 129.5cm Length)|
Baby Crib mattress size dimensions are widely accepted to be the standard across the U.S., so that this bed size will fit any standard crib. A crib-size mattress should not be more than 6 inches thick. For safety reasons, crib mattresses are firmer than adult mattresses.
|Small Single||30" Wide x 75" Length - (76.2cm Wide x 190.5cm Length)|
Suitable for babies who have outgrown their crib (cot) or toddlers, the Small Single size mattress is among the smallest mattress available.
|Twin||38" Wide x 75" Length - (96.5cm Wide x 188.0cm Length)|
A Twin size mattress is the smallest of adult-size mattresses. A Twin size mattress would be suitable for a child who has outgrown the toddler bed, a single adult, or those with small bedrooms. A twin mattress is commonly used for daybeds, bunk beds, dorm rooms, or small guest bedrooms.
|Twin XL||38" Wide x 80" Length - (96.5cm Wide x 203.5cm Length)|
Twin XL beds are 38" x 80", giving you an additional 5" in length that the twin size allows you to stretch out your legs and are ideal for the single taller person. Two Twin XL mattresses make up the dimensions of one King size mattress and fit in a King size bed frame allowing sleepers to separately sit up or lie back without disrupting their partner.
|Full||54" Wide x 75" Length - (134.5cm Wide x 190.5cm Length)|
A Full-size mattress may also be referred to as a "standard double." Full-size mattresses provide a good compromise between twin and queen-size mattresses for single active sleepers who like to sprawl out or couples with small bedrooms. Two people can sleep comfortably but compactly on a full or double. A full bed size offers a good amount of space for single sleepers and is a good bed size option for a guest bedroom.
|Full xL||54" Wide x 80" Length - (137cm Wide x 203.5cm Length)|
The full xL size mattress is 5 inches longer than a standard full mattress. The extra length provides greater legroom making it a great fit for taller single sleepers.
|Queen Size||60" Wide x 80" Length - (152cm Wide x 203.5cm Length)|
A queen-size mattress is great for couples who do not need too much space for sleeping or for a single adult who prefers extra space to sprawl out. This is a trendy mattress size in the U.S and is a comfortable fit for single active sleepers, couples, and those who share a bed with children or pets.
|Olympic Queen Size||66" Wide x 80" Length - (167cm Wide x 203.5cm Length)|
The Olympic queen size is six inches wider than the popular queen-size mattress. A traditional King or Queen size frame will not fit a traditional King or Queen size frame. You will need an Olympic Queen bed frame that measures 66" wide and 80" long. These are the better option for those who don’t need something super large but something big enough for a couple to sleep comfortably. However, as the Olympic queen-size bed isn’t standard, few mattress manufacturers have this size and finding compatible bed frames and bedding accessories may be challenging.
|King Size||76" Wide x 80" Length - (193cm Wide x 203.5cm Length)|
Offering a luxurious amount of space, king mattress sizes provide the equivalent of a twin xl mattress size to themselves. King-size mattresses are wider but shorter than California king-size mattresses. The king size also has a split option (see next mattress down). These are two Twin XL mattresses placed side-by-side. This style is also a good fit for adjustable beds with split-side functionality.
|38" Wide x 80" Length - (80cm Wide x 203.5cm Length)|
A Split King size mattress uses two identical Twin XL-sized mattresses equal to the size of a complete King size mattress. The split mattress allows sleepers to have a mattress that is individually right for them.
|California King Size||72" Wide x 84" Length - (183cm Wide x 213.5cm Length)|
A California king is sometimes known as the extra-long king when it comes to California king vs. king beds. California king-size mattresses have four inches less width than a conventional king-size bed and are 4 inches longer in overall length. If your feet hang off the edge of a mattress, a California king-size mattress will provide you with the length you need.
|Wyoming King Size||84" Wide x 84" Length - (213.5cm Wide x 213.5cm Length)|
A Wyoming king bed is 8 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a standard king-size bed, which measures 76 inches by 80 inches. It’s a good option for families who feel cramped in large-sized beds. If you have to accommodate more sleepers, a Wyoming king may be a better fit than a Texas king-size bed.
|Texas King Size||80" Wide x 96" Length - (203.5cm Wide x 244cm Length)|
The Texas king bed mattress is perfect for individuals who need that extra leg room. Measuring 80 inches by 96 inches, the Texas king bed is narrower than the Wyoming king. However, it compensates for this loss by being 14 inches long.
|Alaskan King Size||108" Wide x 108" Length - (274cm Wide x 274cm Length)|
One notable feature of the Alaskan king is its larger size and unique shape - it’s big, square - with dimensions at a whopping nine feet long by nine feet wide, space will always be abundant. An Alaskan King is much bigger than a California King, measuring 24 inches long and 36 inches wider.
